Necessary But Could Be So Much Better

Dorsch and Dorsch's Understanding Anesthesia Equipment is simply the most thorough book on anesthesia equipment out there that I am aware of. You will find most of the general basics of anesthesia equipment in Barash's Clinical Anesthesia and even more summary books like Stoelting's Basics of Anesthesia) and Morgan & Mikhail's Clinical Anesthesiology. Nevertheless, those books tend to not give you the ins-and-outs of all of the various equipment out there. Dorsch & Dorsch provide very detailed information ad nauseum. However, the endless black-and-white diagrams and black-and-white photos (though it appears very accurate) make the book very difficult to find the precise information that you are looking for. And the black-and-white diagrams tend to be much more difficult to understand than is necessary. For a book that has been through so many revisions and costs well upward of a hundred bucks, I would expect some color photos and some better constructed color diagrams.

The book does seem thorough, but is simply so much more difficult to use than it needs to be. Using Dorsch & Dorsch as a base text, we are strongly in need of a full revision aimed at formatting, photo, and diagram revisions.

The website included in the book offers a searchable text and a test bank. The search engine on the text is poor and very difficult to use. I find myself going to the chapter of interest and using a ctrl-f browser-based search of the page. The online quizzes are the exact same as is found at the end of each chapter. I have taken about half of the quizzes and have found errors in the online-based quiz bank in approximately half of those that I took. In need of some quality control. Nevertheless, I am appreciative of the online access to the text.

Disappointed

I am sad that this will be the last volume by authors I have relied on since I began in anesthesia in 1981. This is my third purchase of one of their works but I must say that I am dissappointed. Much of the charm of earlier editions (I own 1st and 4th) seems to be missing and there seems to be a reliance on manufacturer's supplied illustrations. Explanations and diagrams seem to come directly from the manufactuer.

That being said I would still recommend this book to students (both SRNAs and Resident physcians)as a required text. This book will alow you to be competent to trouble shoot a system while waiting for BME to arrive,or for you to feel confident to swap a machine in the middle of a case. It gives you a familiarization of much adjunct equipment before you use it the first time. It apprises you of possible hazards and deals with evnvironmental issues in anesthetizing locations.

Not their best work, but have not seen anyone else consistently cover this topic over the span of their work. A replacement will be hard to find, and future practitioners will suffer with their retirement.

this is definitely the book to give you everything you need to understand anaesthesia equipment
its a "stay at home book" tho
big and heavy
the pages are not as easy to read since its all black and white and there's alot of material to read plus the pictures are not as many as i would have liked
but still a very good book
glad i got it for my residency
always on top of my info because of it

Jonathan Cobb is a former associate of the Center for the Study of Public Policy, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Richard Sennett’s books include The Corrosion of Character, Flesh and Stone, and Respect. He was the founding director of the New York Institute for the Humanities and now teaches sociology at New York University and at the London School of Economics.

Life- Changing

I first read this book about 10 years after the first edition was published in 1973, and recently re-read my (much-highlighted and annotated) copy. I have given the book five stars for it's approach to dealing with working-class issues, that is, looking at the internal life of the working class and how the deeply-ingrained attitudes in our culture affect those within the working classes. To my knowledge, prior to Sennett and Cobb, no one had done that. To this reader, who grew up in a working-class household, it was a revolutionary read at the time and led me to an understanding that allowed me to transform my self-image and leave behind negative assumptions. For that, no amount of stars can thank the authors enough.
The one failing I see in the book is the limit on the research - all of which was done during interviews with working-class residents of Boston in the middle of the last century. While (certainly) the working-class residents of Boston share characteristics with all working-class in this country, many localities have their own local culture, and most assuredly Boston does, a factor which seems not to have been taken into account in conclusions drawn. A more accurate look at working-class attitudes would have, and, I believe, should have, interviewed more widely-situated study subjects.
That said, however, the conclusions drawn by Sennett and Cobb hold up, even forty years later. The primary damage done to working-class within this county is to their sense of their human dignity, and it is the struggle for dignity which is damaged by their position in society, and it is that struggle which also traps them in their situation.
Some have concluded that Sennett and Cobb argue for a change in respect of human dignity being the thing that can or could change society for the better, but no such conclusion is actually included in the book. What they do say is that the attitudes of mainstream society toward the working class trap those workers in a constant and self-defeating struggle for dignity. That, in my view, has not changed since the publication of this book in 1973. As a college composition professor, I have frequently had students do research analysis of various images in the media, and have been far too frequently horrified by the students who conclude that the images of the working class presented in such shows as Married With Children or The Simpsons are accurate reflections of the character and intelligence of members of our working class. Sennett and Cobb identified the heart of the problem, and, for working class children like myself, offered us mental liberation from the assumptions made about us, but society has done little to nothing to change those assumptions in the forty years since.

Excellent primer, but now a little outdated

This is an excellent primer on the OIL industry. I highly recommend for anyone interested in the history of 20th century Industry and World Politics.
This book will help any reader better understand recent Middle East events, as it provides details of the many decisions and actions that have led to the current situations. By providing the historic details and backdrop of the Oil Industry, a reader can gain better context for current actions, tensions and misunderstandings.
It's too bad this book has not been updated. My paperback edition ends with the Carter Administration.

Not bad if you're new to language learning, but there are better books

This book is targeted primarily at English speakers (obviously, since it's written in English!) who don't yet speak any second language. As such, I found it to be a bit too basic or me in many ways. I already speak two other languages to varying degrees, so many of his points of advice didn't directly relate to me.

It's still a good book, though, although there are probably better books on the topic. How to Learn Any Language: Quickly, Easily and On Your Own by Barry Farber would be my recommendation, although it's a bit dated (having been written before the Internet was really a thing for language learners).

The content of this book basically boils down to:

* Practicing your target language with real people from day one is essential.

Beyond that, it brought my attention to Anki (http://ankisrs.net/), a free flash card program for PC, Android, IOS, and the web, which has now replaced my paper flash cards.

Bottom line: Not a bad book if you're a beginner at learning languages, but not the best one either.

Motivational book, not a methodology book

Well, it's clear Benny is not a professional writer, but I knew that when purchasing the book. Most of the beginning chapters are all fluff-- talking about his personal history in language learning, dispelling language-learning myths, talking about how anyone can learn a language if you're just not lazy, blah blah blah. Nothing is backed up with science, and anyone that has studied language acquisition professionally will be able to call him out at a few points. (He once states that babies are at no cognitive advantage in language-learning to adults-- this is not true, their neural circuits are flexible at that age and stiffen over time, making it harder to get the brain to work that way again.) However, if you've ever tried to learn a language before, you know it really is just that you get what you put into it (in terms of studying and practicing), and when used as more of a motivational book instead of a methods book, I would actually recommend it. He is very passionate about what he does, and it's as obvious as it is infectious. Whenever I don't feel like studying, I'll read a chapter or two and it completely reignites my motivation.

A Background in Psychology Gets You a Long Way…

When I first looked at this book, I looked at the author’s bio (for credentials. I’m that sort of person.), I expected a LOT from this book, and it delivered. Using much of his prior knowledge on the subject, the author not only explains reverse psychology but expands on our expectations of it. I really appreciated this new lens he provides, for us to see this field from another angle, and better appreciate it.

Great Book for Studying Behavior, Decisions and Appeals

I love to read and to study psychology, so when I saw the title of this book, I figured it would be right up my alley. I’m always wondering about how our natures are best appealed to, how we must behave to get the things we want, how differences in behavior impact our decisions. Reading this book answered many of those questions and interested me enough to want to continue to read more. The studies included were interesting, too, and provided proof for the theories suggested. If you are interested in psychology and would like to learn more about the behaviors surrounding hooking up and forming new relationships, read this book.

it soars

Superb prose in a gritty and vast WWI landscape. This is worth having, and reading over and over. This author has used some interesting ways of telling this story, and not just in the blood rivalry between the French ace Sgt. Chamay and his personal enemy, German Lt. Kupper. Look for some interesting subplots: the adventures of the ham from Kempinsky's, the comic (and sometimes dangerous) mishaps of Chamay's mechanics, and Sgt. Chamay's bicycle trip through the terrible aftermath of the Nivelle Offensive.

The author has avoided the cliches about knights of the air. He spares nothing about the lethal and grisly nature of fighting, without parachutes, in what were little more than cloth-and-wood kites. And Chamay's battle with Kupper is not a duel but a search for vengeance: he wants to kill him, not joust.

And the other people in the book! They're vivid; previous reviewers rightly praise Gann's characterizations. Another vivid character worth a mention is Chamay's squadron leader, Capt. Jourdan, "His Excellency" (not complimentary) to his unit, who shows some surprising changes. "For the seediest, most ineffectual officer they had ever known had taught them what it was to be a soldier of France."

Here's hoping this book is back in print someday.

UNEXPECTED SUPRISE

Although I am a fan of Ernest K. Gann I had not heard much about this book before I found it at a used book store and decided to read it. It is a very enjoyable book about WW1 aviation. A fictional work centering on the experiences of two fighter pilots, one French the other German. Written by Gann during his halcion days as a best selling author (1965) it is an excellent read. It was a book of the month club selection when it first came out and is therefore rather plentiful at used book stores and book sales. If you want a hot tip on another of Gann's books that has been pretty much forgotten try Soldier of Fortune. One of his best even though it is not about Flying. Also made into a pretty good movie staring Clark Gable.

I took away one star because the Book of Proverbs ITSELF
should be what gets all five stars.
The other 'missing' star would preferably go to ADDITIONAL
books of the Holy Bible (God's Word saves: Gen3, Mt4, Lk4),
rather than to a guidebook or commentary, however commendable.
