Well written, concise text, with excellent illustrations

I used this book for a graduate level course in earth science. It was not required reading, but since I had no earth science back ground, I found that I needed to read a basic textbook in order to understand the journal articles that were required for the course. By the end of the semester, I had read most of this extremely well written book, and felt that in terms of mastery of the course content, I had surpassed even those who had majored in geology as undergrads. I am a very visual learner, and particularly appreciated the beautiful illustrations, many of which visually summarize key concepts. One of my favorite textbooks ever.

Great conceptual book for introductory Earth Systems courses

I selected this textbook for my Intro to Earth Systems Science course on the recommendation of colleagues. I was very happy with the level at which the book is written, the quality of images and diagrams, a the topics covered. I did not follow the chapters in sequential order - for example, I think it makes more sense to teach concepts of atmospheric convection before ocean currents. The end of chapter problems were also a bit hit or miss. But I was happy with the book and it received favorable reviews by my students.

This book was recommended by the instructor and follows his lectures. It is very informative as textbooks go, and although I am not overly interested in science, it answers a lot of questions.

In the revised and updated edition of Lean Thinking: Banish Waste and Create Wealth in Your Corporation, authors James P. Womack and Daniel T. Jones provide a thoughtful expansion upon their value-based business system based on the Toyota model. Along the way they update their action plan in light of new research and the increasing globalization of manufacturing, and they revisit some of their key case studies (most of which still derive, however, from the automotive, aerospace, and other manufacturing industries).

The core of the lean model remains the same in the new edition. All businesses must define the "value" that they produce as the product that best suits customer needs. The leaders must then identify and clarify the "value stream," the nexus of actions to bring the product through problems solving, information management, and physical transformation tasks. Next, "lean enterprise" lines up suppliers with this value stream. "Flow" traces the product across departments. "Pull" then activates the flow as the business re-orients towards the pull of the customer's needs. Finally, with the company reengineered towards its core value in a flow process, the business re-orients towards "perfection," rooting out all the remaining muda (Japanese for "waste") in the system.

Despite the authors' claims to "actionable principles for creating lasting value in any business during any business conditions," the lean model is not demonstrated with broad applications in the service or retail industries. Great, if you like stories about business.

I'm not sure who the audience is for Lean Thinking. Call me na�ve, but I assumed it was written by Womack and Jones to help organizations analyze their business processes and eliminate muda (Japanese for "waste"), thereby improving overall performance. However, after reading almost 250 pages of anecdotal success stories, the chapter entitled "Action Plan," where one would assume resides the punch-line of the text, I was met by the profound advice to "Get the knowledge" by hiring one of the numerous experts in North America, Europe or Japan, and read some of the "vast literature" available on lean techniques. Reminds me of the Steve Martin joke where he tells you how to be a millionaire. "First, get a million dollars."
After reading Lean Thinking, I'm struck by the irony that while the authors recommend removing waste from the manner by which your products are delivered to the end customer, they don't take their own advice. The text could have been distilled from 384 pages down to five or six, since there's no real substantive instruction on how to implement lean principles. Then again, maybe I completely misinterpreted the intent of the authors as to their audience and it really was written for the business historian who enjoys reading about how Pratt & Whitney started in 1855. That must be it, because after I ponder the title, I realize that Lean Thinking is for just that, thinking. What I really wanted was a book entitled Lean Doing.

A Business Paradox: Less Really Can Achieve More

This is a new and expanded second edition of a book first published in 1996. Of special interest to me was what Womack and Jones had to say in the preface regarding what has since happened to the companies previously discussed. Apparently lean thinking has enabled Toyota, Wiremold, Porsche, Lantech, and Pratt & Whitney to sustain operational excellence and economic prosperity.
Briefly, how do Womack and Jones define lean thinking? It is the opposite of muda (a Japanese) word for anything which consumes resources without creating value. In a word, waste. Lean thinking is lean because "it provides a way to do more and more with less and less -- less human effort, less equipment, less time, and less space -- while coming closer and closer to providing customers with exactly what they want." Lean thinking is thus a process of thought, not an expedient response or a stop-gap solution. The challenge, according to Womack and Jones, is to convert muda into real, quantifiable value and the process to achieve that worthy objective requires everyone within an organization (regardless of size or nature) to be actively involved in that process. Once again, in this new edition they address questions such as these:
1. How can certain "simple, actionable principles" enable any business to create lasting value during any business conditions?
2. How can these principles be applied most effectively in real businesses, regardless of size or nature?
3. How can a relentless focus on the value stream for every product create "a true lean enterprise that optimizes the value created for the customer while minimizing time, cost, and errors"?
In Part IV, Womack and Jones update the continuing advance of of lean thinking. They rack the trend in inventory turns and the progress of their profiled companies. Also of special interest to me was the discussion of what Womack and Jones have learned since 1996 which probably explains why they introduce a new range of implementation tools support value stream mapping initiatives and thereby "to raise consciousness about value and its components, leading to action."
Obviously, even if everyone involved within a given organization is committed to lean thinking, to creating value while (and by) eliminating waste, the process requires specific strategies and tactics to succeed. Hence the importance of the last chapter in this book., "Institutionalizing the Revolution." I presume to suggest that the process of lean thinking never ends. Inevitably, success creates abundance; abundance often permits waste. I also presume to suggest that priorities must first be set so that the implementation of lean thinking process does not inadvertently create or neglect waste in areas which influence the creation of value for customers.
Although highly readable, this is not an "easy read" because it requires rigorous thinking about what is most important to a given organization, rigorous thinking about the root causes (rather than the symptoms) of that organization's problems, and rigorous thinking about the most prudent use of resources to eliminate those problems. Because of the importance of the material which Womack and Jones share, I strongly recommend that decision-makers read and then re-read this book before getting together to exchange reactions to it. Out of that discussion, I hope, will come both a collective commitment to lean thinking and the personal determination of each executive to apply what she or he has learned from this book in operational areas where waste has most diminished value.

Not one of Womack's best works

I personally do a vast amount of reading with lean enterprise being of special interest. Womack has done some great work, but this is a "tough read" even for serious lean enthusiasts. I typically finish a book of this length within 2-3 days then re-read it and highlight. It literally took me 11 weeks because I was lulled to a point in which reading further would be of no benefit and would have to put it back on the shelf and revisit it days later. I realize that scholarly and business writing is not especially exciting as I am constantly reading and doing research but this one was tough even for me, an avid reader.

Without A Doubt The Best Freakin' Book I Have Ever Read On Copywriting! You Gotta Get This Thing!

I have read to half way through the 40th page and I am absolutely blown away. This is, by far, the best book I have read on the topic. If you only invest in one book on copywriting, this should be the one. It is nothing short of a masterpiece! The author is brilliant. Before purchasing this I had never heard of Andy Maslen, but after reading only as far as I have I am a fan... 110%. I could sit here and write paragraphs praising this book, but Ill save you the novel... Just do yourself a favor and BUY THIS! I've been passing this book over for a few months, don't make the mistake I did by waiting!

I had seen this book mentioned on several copy writing forums and decided to read it. I am very glad I did, Andy does a great job of explaining many concepts in copy writing. As an experienced copywriter I gained a lot of insight and it would provide a solid education to someone new to copy writing as well.

Groundbreaking and effective

This book goes far beyond any other book I have ever read about female sexuality, and believe me I've read plenty of them over the years. It encourages you to go beyond thinking about sex per se and to use your sexual life force to begin functioning sexually on a much higher level, beyond anything you might even have considered possible.

These procedures are designed to give you complete mastery over your body's physical responses. Some can be difficult in the
beginning but practice makes them easier. For example, he shows you step-by-step how to channel sexual energy so that instead of
having a physical climax, you can spiral that very energy throughout your body, one location at a time. This has the effect of revitalizing all your organs, glands, and nerves in each location as the energy passes through it. Those familiar with the macrocosmic orbit will recognize the procedure. Once you develop this ability, you will be able to experience greater and more fulfilling physical climaxes that are not localized but involve your entire body. Ultimately it's designed to enable you and your partner to experience a complete physical and spiritual union as well as a union with God or the universe or the higher power or whatever you want to call it..

Since it can be difficult to do the steps he describes while holding the book in your hand and reading the instructions, I recommend taping yourself reading the instructions out loud at an un-hurried pace and then using the tape instead of the book to guide you through the exercises.

This is a challenging book but completely rewarding if you actually start putting the steps into practice. I had some resistance in the beginning to going and trying some of them. It was much easier to just keep reading. But when I pushed through and followed his instructions for a few things, I was really impressed and inspired by the way they made me feel. The first time I sat down and actually did the entire ovarian breathing process - and believe me, I did NOT do it perfectly - I felt an awakening in my body that was profound and inspiring.. I've been practicing raja, hatha, and swara yoga for a while, so I guess I was ready, but I feel that this book can benefit anyone with even the slightest inclination to try some of the methods he provides, and just a little bit of practice will go a long way.

This book isn't for everyone. It's not a bunch of intellectual exercises, but it does involve your mind as well as your body and your
spirit. It provides very practical physical steps that you can do by yourself, and later with your partner. If you think you're going
to simply read it and have it change your life, you could be disappointed. To get the most out of this book you will have to apply
yourself. But even if you simply read it, it can open your mind to what is possible. The rewards will probably be on a scale with
how much effort you put into it.

This is carefully written, itused to be the difinitive guide to tantric path good instruction on concepts for both men and women

It says 'Mantak' is the author however I think his wife wrote or closely edited this book. The personality of this book is precious.

I think it is the best book they produced and it is one of the first written if not published a little later. If you are into martial arts, this information can be very meaningful to begin to comprise a rare and viable path. It can be easily misunderstood from western conventional thinking. It's like learning to unfathom the art to make good tea now that you appreciate good coffee. The formulas are within oneself, so it is a good usable guide to discover the language and thinking processes or mindset for developing one's own "Formulas". It briefly touches upon the deleterious karmic consequences of tantric yoga mal- practice, however that is a whole'nother'world and if you are truly seeking an alternative way, this book could be a catalyst to helping you to finding your destiny.. Who knows, with this knowledge base, you might win the first marathon that you ever run!

healing Love through the Tao

A spiritual view and method of sexual practice. As a woman who was raped in the past, I wanted to be able to look at sex from a different perspective other than someone's lust. This book doesn't deal with the subject of rape (one should visit a councilor for that), but rather reveals practices and methods for healing and rejuvenating the body through work with herself and also a loving sexual partner. A celibate woman may also benefit from these exercises. Breathing exercise and explicit diagrams are also used. This is esoteric knowledge which for centuries was secret in China. It's a wealth of fabulous knowledge and very helpful. There is a companion book for men as well. Oh, to find a partner trained in this method!

About the Author

James N. Butcher was born in West Virginia. He enlisted in the Army when he was 17 years old and served in the airborne infantry for 3 years, including a 1-year tour in Korea during the Korean War. After military service, he attended Guilford College, graduating in 1960 with a BA in psychology. He received an MA in experimental psychology in 1962 and a PhD in clinical psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was awarded Doctor Honoris Causa from the Free University of Brussels, Belgium, in 1990 and an honorary doctorate from the University of Florence, Florence, Italy in 2005. He is currently professor emeritus in the Department of Psychology at the University of Minnesota. He was associate director and director of the clinical psychology program at the university for 19 years. He was a member of the University of Minnesota Press’s MMPI Consultative Committee, which under-took the revision of the MMPI in 1989. He was formerly the editor of Psychological Assessment, a journal of the American Psychological Association, and serves as consulting editor or reviewer for numerous other journals in psychology and psychiatry. Dr. Butcher has been actively involved in developing and organizing disaster response programs for dealing with human problems following airline disasters. He organized a model crisis intervention disaster response for the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport and organized and supervised the psychological services offered following two major airline disasters: Northwest Flight 255 in Detroit, Michigan, and Aloha Airlines on Maui. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Society for Personality Assessment. He has published 55 books and more than 200 articles in the fields of abnormal psychology, cross-cultural psychology, and personality assessment.

Jill M. Hooley is a professor of psychology at Harvard University. She is also the head of the experimental psychopathology and clinical psychology program at Harvard. Dr. Hooley was born in England and received a B.Sc. in Psychology from the University of Liverpool. This was followed by research work at Cambridge University. She then attended Magdalen College, Oxford, where she completed her D.Phil. After a move to the United States and additional training in clinical psychology at SUNY Stony Brook, Dr. Hooley took a position at Harvard, where she has been a faculty member since 1985.

Dr. Hooley has a long-standing interest in psychosocial predictors of psychiatric relapse in patients with severe psychopathology such as schizophrenia and depression. Her research has been supported by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and by the Borderline Personality Disorder Research Foundation. She is currently using fMRI to study emotion regulation in people who are vulnerable to depression and in people who are suffering from borderline personality disorder. Another area of research interest is non-suicidal self-harming behaviors such as skin cutting or burning.

In 2000, Dr Hooley received the Aaron T. Beck Award for Excellence in Psychopathology Research. She is currently the president of the Society for Research in Psychopathology. The author of many scholarly publications, Dr. Hooley is an Associate Editor for Applied and Preventive Psychology. She also serves on the editorial boards of several journals including the Journal of Family Psychology, Family Process, and Personality Disorders: Theory, Research and Treatment.

At Harvard, Dr Hooley has taught graduate and undergraduate classes in introductory psychology, abnormal psychology, schizophrenia, mood disorders, psychiatric diagnosis, and psychological treatment. Reflecting her commitment to the scientist-practitioner model, she also does clinical work specializing in the treatment of people with depression, anxiety disorders, and personality disorders.

Susan Mineka, born and raised in Ithaca, New York, received her undergraduate degree magna cum laude in psychology at Cornell University. She received a PhD in experimental psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, and later completed a formal clinical retraining program from 1981–1984. She taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and at the University of Texas at Austin before moving to Northwestern University in 1987. Since 1987 she has been Professor of Psychology at Northwestern and since 1998 she has served as Director of Clinical Training there. She has taught a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses, including introductory psychology, learning, motivation, abnormal psychology, and cognitive-behavior therapy. Her current research interests include cognitive and behavioral approaches to understanding the etiology, maintenance, and treatment of anxiety and mood disorders. She is currently a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, and the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. She has served as Editor of the Journal of Abnormal Psychology (1990–1994). She is currently serving as an Associate Editor for Emotion, and is on the editorial boards of several of the leading journals in the field. She was also President of the Society for the Science of Clinical Psychology (1994–1995) and was President of the Midwestern Psychological Association (1997). She also served on the American Psychological Association’s Board of Scientific Affairs (1992–1994, Chair 1994), on the Executive Board of the Society for Research in Psychopathology (1992–1994, 2000–2003), and on the Board of Directors of the American Psychological Society (2001–2004). During 1997–1998 she was a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford.

This is IMHO, hands-down the authoritative text on Abnormal Psychology today. We used the 11th edition in my graduate school psychopathology, and I recently purchased this updated edition, with all of the DSM-V changes added. Looking forward to re-reading this text once again. It serves as a "go-to" reference, which I keep on my office desk at all times. One down-side, they no longer publish the "study guide" that accompanied previous editions, wish they would bring that back in future editions.

The 14th edition is an excellent text for Abnormal Psychology or Behavior Pathology. Its cross reference to the DSM-IV-TR is up to date and current with the most recent research on all of the DSM-IV-TR disorders. I do not recommend purchasing an earlier edition, because this has so much more detail and illustrations especially the most recent brain biology.Abnormal Psychology (14th Edition)

Average but too much fluff

Material in book was pretty good overall, and I liked how they had chapter summaries, and sections dedicated to updates/advancements in the field. The negative thing about this textbook is that the print is so small it made my eyes hurt reading it and there was too much fluff. The chapters took forever to read and with all the fluff it made it nearly impossible to skim.

Astounding!

This book is a masterpiece about a masterpiece. Not only is it the best catalog I know of displaying these breathtaking world treasures, it's also the only one I've ever seen that zooms in close on this style of work, visually and textually, graphically and technically. If you have ANY interest in seeing these pieces as if you owned them, or have ever wondered about the techniques behind such work, don't hesitate. Over my long lifetime of collecting books and catalogs concerning Japanese painting, I've never seen anything like it and have always wanted to; it's a deeply-held wish granted. A thousand thanks to all who helped make it happen.

Beautiful

This book has been released in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name that opened at the National Gallery in Washington DC on 30 March. The exhibition is only on for 30 days, and it's doubtful whether the paintings will ever be on display in the US again as they are rather fragile and have only been displayed all together once before in over 100 years.

As a local I've been to see the exhibition several times and it is truly superb: the detail in the 30 bird-and-flower paintings is wonderful, but also the arrangements of the plants and animals is lovely. When you go back to see the scrolls again (and again) you keep gaining new appreciation of the works. Little details catch your eye such as the tilt of a bird's head, the patterning of the roosters' feathers, the little wavy feathers on the back of the phoenix's neck, the exquisite scales of the fish. Initially I wondered why there were so many paintings of humble chickens, but after studying them so much I now appreciate that the rooster, in all its different plumages, is a truly beautiful bird!

It's because of the great beauty in the little details that a good catalog book is a very worthwhile purchase. I browsed the display copies in the National Gallery and they looked very good, with lots of nice blow-ups of different sections of the paintings. Unfortunately, the books sold out very early into the exhibition so I've placed my order with Amazon and I hope it arrives soon. It will be a terrific souvenir of a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition.

Sets a new standard for art history books

This is the most amazing art history book that I have ever seen! Finally a book that gives the reader as complete a visual experience as could be had without seeing the actual paintings. This book sets a new standard for all such works in the future. All other art history books and catalogues pale by comparison to this show catalogue.
First, we get a presentation of the exhibit in its entirety, and how each painting contributes to the whole. Next, at least three levels of viewing are presented for each painting, the overall painting, closer views of key areas, and finally seeing a close and detailed view of the paint on its textile surface. It continues with the historical and cultural analysis of the period of the paintings creation and finally a thorough analysis of the technical aspects of the paintings; pigment, paint, supports, etc. Just a fabulous exploration of a small body of work by one painter. Amazing.
When I saw the story about this exceptional exhibit on the PBS News Hour I really regretted that I did not have the money to fly from the west coast to Washington to see the paintings. This book is definitely the next best thing and at at quite a reasonable cost considering the alternative. I have not as yet read all of the text, but if it lives up to the visual impact, as I feel sure it will, it will still be a total understatement of the triumph this book manifests. The acknowledgements page is an understatement to the paeans of praise this book and its creators deserve. Thanks to all who worked on this magnificent gift to art lovers.
