Outstanding text for newcomers and veterans

One of the hardest things about taking up a new hobby (or profession) is knowing where to begin your study. With so many books and manuals on the market, the sheer volume of available information can seem overwhelming. Well, neophyte photographers, take heart, because here is the book that you need. If I could recommend only one source for someone really looking to "get serious" about taking quality photographs, this would be it.

The book progresses in a very logical manner, beginning with a basic introduction to the very nature of light and optics and proceeding through camera mechanics, principles of lighting and composition, film characteristics, and digital techniques. As you would expect in any photography text, there are many, many photographic illustrations. One thing that really shines about Langford is the wonderful diagrams, which are among the best I have seen in any textbook. Understanding optics and the behavior of light is not always intuitive, but the diagrams do an excellent job of illustrating difficult concepts in an easy-to-grasp manner.

The writing itself, while clear and unambiguous, sometimes tends a little dry. You may find books like "Understanding Exposure" or any of Scott Shelby's popular series to be more engaging; these are excellent books, however Langford has a much wider scope and so of necessity the prose is somewhat more technical. In my opinion, though, this also makes it a more satisfying reading experience. Shelby's series tell you how to do something, but Langford tells you why it works.

A word about digital and film. It is true that this book is somewhat heavily weighted toward the "old-fashioned" subject of film photography. Indeed, multiple chapters are spent discussing the characteristics and chemistry of film as well as its processing and darkroom techniques. (I suppose many would even consider the discussion of handheld light meters to be antiquated.) As someone who shoots primarily with film, I have no problem with this and in fact welcome it. This isn't the forum for rehashing the "film vs. digital" debate, but I would encourage anyone reading this -- especially those who are new to the field -- to keep an open mind. Film is anything but obsolete, and an understanding of it can only strengthen your photographic skills. The information is there if you want it, but for those who choose to skip it, there is also a strong introduction to digital techniques.

In summation, I think this is a book that should sit on any photographer's shelf. I have been shooting for years, but I still consult this text from time to time to refresh myself on this point or that. I strongly recommend it to anyone looking to get the most out of their camera.

VERY GOOD INFORMATION!!!

This book is a great book for a person learning serious photography. It also covers some intermediate topics. There is also mention of Medium format SLRs (Hassleblad and Mamiya) and TLRs. This book gives equal coverage to both film and digital.

Good book, Still very Old

This book used to be good. It explains basic principles of photography very well.

Although in its ninth edition, and published in 2010, the book is still very old. It is film-oriented and need a complete overhaul. A lot of techniques are already out-dated. About half of the book can be completely ignored. It talks too much about film, film processing, large format camera, hand-held meter etc.

The books need a complete re-written. Simply adding some contents of digital cameras does not make it modern.

Very good up to IBM360, Great Bibliograpy, Highly Readable

This book focuses on early machines up to the development of the IBM 360. It covers both the technology and the personalities involved. It contains startling facts such as the Z4 (a mechanical computer) could reorder instructions to improve speed (circa 1948). It outline some of the most brilliant work in computer science. I wish it had more technical detail, however it does have an extensive bibliography. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in a deep understanding of computers. and where they are going.

In many situations, only a hand-ax will suffice for the felling of trees, the rough shaping of lumber, the creation of firewood, and clearing out the nooks and crannies of forested areas for other purposes -- including the planting of new trees. Good read and a howto book. What more could you ask for?

There are three kinds of "howto" books. The basic 123 books. Great for a novice that wants more exposure to the subject or the weekend warrior that doesn't care. Then there are dry technical books that cover great detail, the kind you go to for reference to refresh your memory. Then there is the third kind which this book fits into. The learning experience, a book you can read from cover to cover and by the end you've learned something. Not really a turn to page # and reference this topic or look up this subject. But the way this is written, you come as close to gaining form the author's experience as you could from a written work. I'd really recommend this book if you have any interest in axes or crosscut saws or wood cutting in general. It's well written and a good read. The description of the hurricane of 38 for example, I really enjoyed.

This Book Covers It All Well

This fine book tells you in an easily understandable way everything you need to know about safely and efficiently selecting, felling, cutting, spitting, and storing firewood. It tells you which woods keep most easily for long-term storage, which are easy or difficult to split, how hot and for how long the woods burn. And it tells you a lot more that I didn't mention. The focus is on doing it all with axes.The author tells you how to select the right axe and how to maintain your axe. He also tells you enough about manual saws and chainsaws that I still highly recommend the book even if you don't ever plan to swing an axe or a maul, but plan to do it all with chainsaws and wood splitters. The book contains a few anecdotes related to its topic; they all make useful points.

Update of Keeping Warm With an Ax: A Woodcutter's Handbook

This is an revision of "Keeping Warm With an Ax: A Woodcutter's Handbook", from 1981.

It claims to be a revision, but I don't see much difference between the two. Whatever may have been added or deleted seems to be minimal from a comparison of random pages. Just be aware that it is a update so you don't end up buying both it and Keeping Warm With an Ax: A Woodcutter's Handbook like I did.

It is still one of the best books, if not the best, on selecting and using an axe that I have read among the limited number of books on the axe. Cook's emphasis on safety is well presented, with a concept of "frontal zone" as the area extending from one's feet forward at the width of the outsides of the feet, with objects to be cut to the left or right of this zone. Use of a frontal zone will mean that any swing that misses or ricochets will miss the user because it is already past the user. This is a concept that I had not seen before, yet makes much sense for safety.

I strongly recommend this book. In the very limited genre on axes, it is a gem well worth reading and studying. In fact, I have bought several copies to give to my axe-using friends and relatives.

What a neat little book! The book itself measures 5x5 inches and is about 1 inch thick! It is packed with information.

I really didn't know what to expect with this book, or if I could decipher the information within it to give it a fair and accurate review. I have an interest in design, but, no connection professionally with it, or so I thought.

The book is largely devoted to perception, and how to create it to get the desired perception. It covers subjects like the 80/20 rule, Classical Conditioning and Horror Vacui; (as a formal retail manager of a clothing store, I now understand why store executives made certain choices based on price points). This a only a small list of the principles contained in the book.

The book is illustrated for each subject explained. Which I found extremely helpful and enlightening.

I think this would be a valuable resource/ reference book for anyone who is interested in design on any scale. From creating electronics, retail spaces, to home design, the principles contained within the book could be used for any of this purposes. I think an artist working with anything from pencils to photography or even graphic design could gain a bunch of insight from the book as well. I know I did.

Excellent design resource!

This small yet thick book would make an excellent gift for anyone involved in designing things for a living or as an avocation, visually or otherwise, both as an introduction or refresher. These principles often concern issues of communication and persuasion, so I believe it could be very beneficial for anyone involved in marketing or advertising as well. It names a principle, gives illuminating visual examples, and clearly describes it in brief text. Each principle is described in a few paragraphs on each little two-page spread.

I think that by reading (or revisiting) these well-described concepts, one would develop Depth of Processing (“Thinking hard about a thing improves the likelihood that it can be recalled.”) and avoid the Dunning-Kruger Effect (“A tendency for unskilled people to overestimate their competence and performance.”). Even though I’ve been designing professionally for many years, I find myself turning to this exceptionally helpful book, over and over again.

Well designed book that gives me some basic design knowledge and understanding.

Excellent book and reference for a "jack of all trades". I love that the book covers several areas of design, including both visual and functional aspects. It is conveniently sized, and of course...well designed.

Personally, I play with everything from designing parts and tools to build/repair cars to graphic design to home organization/building projects. I outsource my "real" design work to professionals, but it is still great to understand some of these principles when reviewing their work.

Looks at the psychology behind becoming more likeable through easy to follow steps in multiple situations.

This book really does cover all the bases on the psychology of likability. A comprehensive guide filled with useful information that makes it worth the money. The use of real life situations from the author makes you feel like you really are getting the real insight into how to become more likeable whilst the covering of key topics such as dating, being at bars and in the work-place help the reader to master those key situations that need to be focused on.
The exercises at the end of the chapters add a nice touch that really makes you engage and the concepts help improve your relationship skills from becoming better at the crucial small-talk to equipping yourself with the ‘social belt’ to master any social situation. This book highlights why likability is an important but understated trait that can help you get ahead in life and will help you to do so.

the author's bad grammar clearly shows that he was typing from the ...

The writing is absolutely horrendous, here is a quote from the book: "Show the person you’re interest in, dating or in ia relationship with that you’re mentally, emotionally and physically invested...... and all that takes is letting them know you’re thinking of them." As you can see, the author's bad grammar clearly shows that he was typing from the top of his head and not really putting in time and effort to make any necessary corrections. This is not the first incident, there are plenty more in the first chapter AND THAT IS THE FIRST CHAPTER PEOPLE!!! Save yourself the hard work to understand what the author is trying to say and find a similar book with better grammar elsewhere. Let me summarize the entire book with a toy doll named Lisa Lionheart quote from 'The Simpsons' "BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND YOU CAN ACHIEVE ANYTHING!" I saved you the agony.

I was kind of worried when I bought this, because I had read the reviews that stated no downloads were included for the practice lessons. I guess Amazon or Adobe have fixed this problem, because on the very last page they give a web address, which is also a link to the files. I went to the address on my laptop where the Illustrator program is installed and had no problems downloading all the necessary files. Now I can read the book on the Kindle while following the steps on the laptop. Very useful. It is quite a lot of material however, and is not learned in just a few sittings.

Don't Listen to the people who gave this book a low review!!

I am about half way through the book, and the book is exceptionally well written so the common lay person can understand. They have diagrams and step by step instructions, and lessons to follow along, so you can learn by doing. No need to go to school, you can learn at your own pace. Thank you for a wonderful program and book.
