George M. Marakas is an associate professor of Information Systems at the School of Business at the University of Kansas. His teaching expertise includes Systems Analysis and Design, Technology-Assisted Decision Making, Electronic Commerce, Management of IS Resources, Behavioral IS Research Methods, and Data Visualization and Decision Support. In addition, George is an active researcher in the area of Systems Analysis Methods, Data Mining and Visualization, Creativity Enhancement, Conceptual Data Modeling, and Computer Self-Efficacy. George received his PhD in Information Systems from Florida International University in Miami and his MBA from Colorado State University. Throughout his academic career, George has distinguished himself both through his research and in the classroom. He has received numerous national teaching awards and his research has appeared in the top journals in his field. In addition to this text, he is also the author of three best-selling textbooks in information systems: Decision Support Systems for the 21st Century, Systems Analysis and Design: An Active Approach, and Data Warehousing, Mining, and Visualization: Core Concepts.

I had to get this for a class. It comes as loose leaf bundle of paper that has no resale value.

The authors are stuck in the land that IT forgot. This is an old book with a couple references to "new" technology thrown in to justify a new edition. They talk a lot about mainframes, microcomputer workstations, and modems. A few fun quotes about "Information Appliances" from page 91:

"cellular phones and pagers...promise internet access and the ability to perform basic computational chores."

"the RIM BlackBerry, a small, pager-sized device that can perform all of the common PDA functions, plus act as a fully functional mobile telephone...doesn't even have a visible antenna."

"new entrants to this field...the iPhone essentially combines three products--a revolutionary mobile phone, a wide-screen iPod music and video player..."

I paid $140 for this book to find out that that Apple makes a phone that plays music?

Introduction to information systems

This book is just what it claims to be--an introduction to information systems. There is not a tremendous amount of detail here, but I believe there is enough to give the reader a good idea of the concepts involved. At times, the author does seem to carry on more than is needed, and often you can understand the concept of a chapter very well just by reading the sentences containing the bold words. The best part of the book, in my opinion, is the use of real-world examples, to show how the concepts discussed are being put into use, and how they have benefited real-life companies.
Chances are, if you're buying this book, it's for a college level course. I am a non-business major, and this book was part of a class I took as a general education credit. For this, I think the book is adequate, because it gives a decent introductions into IS without a lot of details. BIS majors, however, will not benefit a great deal from this book, as everything is so basic that it will be of little benefit to someone serious about working with information systems.

Introduction to Information Systems is the book that we are using in my 300 level Business Class in college. I found this book to be well illustrated and informative. It has some information that I have covered in earlier computer classes, but with a litter more in depth knowledge. I have found that the Summary at the end of each Chapter covers the main points, but leaves out some important information. I have found the Review Quiz at the end of each Chapter to be most helpful study tool. The book is well illustrated and contains alot of business examples. I think this is a good book for upper level information systems classes.

About the Author
Jack LEGRAND is Professor in Chemical Engineering at the University of Nantes since 1988. He is specialist in transport phenomena and mixing in processes and (photo) bioreactors. He has ca 215 publications in international journals and is co-author of 16 patents. He is Director of the Joined Research Unit (UMR), constituted by about 200 people, GEPEA (Process Engineering for Energy, Environment and Food) between CNRS, University of Nantes, ONIRIS and School of Mines of Nantes. Since 2009, he is co-coordinator of the thematic group “Biomass for Energy” of the French Alliance for the Research Coordination for Energy (ANCRE). Member since 2010 of the European Science Foundation in the EUROCORES (EUROpean COllaborative RESearch) programme EuroSolarFuels; Molecular Science for a Conceptual Transition from Fossil to Solar Fuels. Since 2014, he is the CNRS representative in the Joint Programme Bioenergy of the European Energy Research Alliance for Bioenergy. Member of the board of the French Society of Chemical Engineering and of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering.
He works on study of the fundamental problems dealing with transfer phenomena in mass/heat exchangers (reactors, mixers) by using the methodology of Chemical Engineering. Studies are related to mixing and bioreactors, particularly the emulsion processing, microencapsulation processes, the centrifugal partition chromatography. The last aspect of his research deals with the photobiochemical engineering. The objective is to apply the chemical engineering concepts to the valorisation of photosynthetic microorganisms (cyanobacteria, microalgae) with the study of the different unit operations, from the culture systems (photobioreactors) to extraction of molecules of interest. This integrated approach is necessary for mass production of microalgae for bioenergy production (3rd generation of biofuels). One essential element is the conception and the modelling of intensified solar photobioreactors. In the laboratory, we have open this year a R&D facility, named AlgoSolis, to study the industrial production of microalgae in real conditions. The goal is to study the scale-up of the photobioreactors, including the solar problematic, and to optimise the operating contitions and the production management. The last concept developed in the lab is the algorefinery concept for the complete valorisation of microalgae. It means that you have to define the process scheme in order to optimise the valorisation of the different fractions of microalgae, lipids for biofuels, pigments, polysaccharides and proteins.

Still Robinson, but ...

Kim Stanley Robinson is a phenomenal writer, but here he's tried to do the impossible: portray the story of catastrophic global warming largely through a handful of deeply realized characters. In some respects, it seems as though he slights the most important character--the Earth. His gift for creating characters has not deserted him, nor his ability to write engaging prose that draws the reader in--40 Signs of Rain is a truly enjoyable book to read despite its flaws. It's just that using a global disaster as the starting point for a meditation on the nature of science and the American political system doesn't work. If you like Robinson, or you like finely drawn characters, go for it--you won't be disappointed. If you're looking for a novel (or trilogy) that truly captures the magnitude of catastrophic climate change, I regret to say this isn't it.

If you like this book: you're likely to enjoy most of the Robinson canon (my personal favorite is Pacific Edge, but the Mars books are also absorbing).

Climate Change Here Now

No one can write this stuff like Robinson. Forty Signs of Rain begins a new trilogy about abrupt climate change. In the book (as in the real world) this is not some vague worry for the future, but something that is going on all around us right now, just waiting for a trigger event before things get really bad. In Forty Signs of Rain, the characters are real people living real lives. They respond to political, environmental, and domestic pressures that are identical to those we all witness every day, so Robinson's plot is very real and tangible throughout.

Don't expect Hollywood disaster themes in this book, climate change isn't working that way. Rather, the characters get on with their lives and struggles while subtle hints of what's to come appear here and there. Throughout the book, the science is rock solid. The only criticism I have is that this is the first Robinson I have read in which the opening book clearly requires a sequel. Forty Signs of Rain does not stand alone unless your expectations are very low. Normally I resent this from authors and publishers, but Robinson is too good at what he writes; I will give him a break.

Vapid, Shallow

Science fiction has a reputation for being shallow. Even some of its most famous writers such as Asimov wrote books whose principal interest lay in the technological view of the future. In Forty Signs of Rain Robinson has managed to convolve shallow writing, a set of not very empathetic and unfocused characters, and a plot that plods rather tediously to a climax that makes the middle inning stretch of a baseball game seem nail-biting in comparison. And I am not a baseball fan.

I do give Robinson an extra star for trying to bring a little more attention to the risks associated with global warming, but given the current political landscape, I'd say he underestimated the size of the fictional devastation that would be required to change national policy by a factor of 100 or 1000. Such a catastrophe might be farther out on the time horizon, but it is not out of the question. So the book strikes me as a lost opportunity. The next guy who tries to write a Sci-Fi book on the subject will get turned down because 'It's been done and it didn't work." Too bad for all of us.

Good Book

This is a must for all serious Eleanor Powell fans. In depth information and great pictures. Its a shame it wasn't printed on better quality paper and the photos are not glossies. But she is (unfortunately) a niche interest movie star. The book however was a small edition print and is worth at least 3 times its published value and will only increase. So a good investment and a pleasure for a fan.

A nice detailed story of the life and career of Eleanor Powell.

This book about Eleanor Powell is difficult to find and much
too expensive (now) because it was apparently self-published
in 1997 by the authoress (Alice B. Levin). Back then it sold for $24.95.
On the third page it says the publisher is Empire Publishing,
and that additional copies could be obtained by writing to Alice Levin.
It probably was never reprinted in paperback. Ms. Levin knew
Eleanor Powell personally My copy is a wonderful 168-page large-print
book with lots of photographs. By careful research on the Internet,
you might be able to find this title for a reasonable price.
