A Travesty of Rubbish

When I downloaded this book from Kindle, I expected an interesting read, with perhaps some Quirky pieces. The Author thanks a friend for"meticulous proofreading"
One can only assume it was proofread by someone under the Influence of Alcohol and/or Drugs..
In the first few pages I ran out of counting the spelling mistakes. The Layout was dreadful. The Author writes as if all in the book was carefully researched.
Should Queen Margarethe ever be so unfortunate as to get a Copy of this book, she would have a fair Chance if she decided to sue for libel. I know Public Figures are fair game for the Press, But what did Queen Margarethe ever do to deserve ths travesty of rubbish. If it were possible to give no stars I would. I would also advise the Author to offer refunds to any poor soul who purchased it

Not as "meaty" as I expected!

As this book created a lot of publicity (it was banned in many countries) when it was first published, I expected there to be a lot of information I had never read before. Unfortunately this is not the case.The only thing I didn't know was that it was Princess Alexandra and not Prince Joachim who was at fault in the break-up of their marriage. However, it is the first book or article on the Danish Royals that criticizes Mary for being "aloof" and more Royal than the Royals. I thoroughly agree with that opinion.
The editing was atrocious. An"L" was missing from every word that had a double "L". The name of each chapter is inserted in inappropriate parts of a sentence as is the page numbers also. I don't know how this is tolerated by Amazon who I thought set such a high standard.

Lightweight gossip reading, horrible typos/formatting

A lot of gossipy tidbits, but not much meat here. The author makes broad speculations about certain things, such as the some disappointment Queen Margrethe experienced in her marriage and the incident that supposedly broke up Prince Joachim's marriage, but she never elaborates or offers facts. She may have had her reasons -- no sources? fear of lawsuit or retribution? idle speculation? -- but it makes for a weak book.

The formatting is a mess -- it looks like someone scanned the print book and failed to clean up the copy. Page headers and numbers appear randomly in the middle of sentences, the letter "l" is missing from many words, and typos abound.

Staying Current in Cancer Chemotherapy

This is the eighth edition of the Cancer Chemotherapy Handbook. It is an essential reference for all oncology health professionals.
The reader has to be indebted to the publisher,Wolters Kluwer/Lippincott Williams & Williams,for the clear concise writings of the
drugs, protocols, and new developments such
as the biologic basis of molecular targeted
therapy. The drug section also requires mention
because it is current, with drugs like ipilimumab, an immunoglobulin, used for melenoma,
being described. The reader must be cautioned to buy this book from Amazon directly. I bought a
copy from India,although the vendor was in the U.S. The cover was a wreck. It is worthwhile to pay a few dollars more for a handsome cover. This is an excellent book to stay current in oncology.

About the Author
Sara Shettleworth is Professor Emerita in the Departments of Psychology and Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Toronto, where she obtained her Ph.D. in 1970. Her research on learning and memory in a variety of species of birds and mammals has been published in over 100 articles and book chapters. Her contributions have been recognized by numerous awards, including the International Comparative Cognition Society's 2008 Research Award. She is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and Animal Behavior Society, and a member of the Society of Experimental Psychologists.

Against anthropomorphism in animal cognition studies

This book is in a way an intellectual history of comparative and evolutionary cognitive studies. I found this to be a fascinating read. It's loaded with mountains of fine details about various animal cognitive systems and provides thorough explanations of the tests that support the scientific claims. Even more interesting, she provides a primer in critical thinking about experimental research and findings. She demonstrates how initial appearances as to results can prove to be misleading when unexamined assumptions are addressed. Perhaps most valuable for me was her constant vigilance against the common errors of anthropomorphism which too easily distort our perceptions of animal life. All effort to draw conclusions about animal behaviour, cognition, communication, consciousness, etc., has to sustain constant critical vigilance against such conceptual errors if anything valuable is to be learned from such research. Shettleworth helped me appreciated this fact in a way I'd not quite previously. Highly recommended!

I found this book by Shettleworth useful on a variety of levels, but it will take me some with re-readings time to properly absorb the evidence proposed here. The book is a keeper in my personal library. A key quote that for me sums up the text: "On this view [that evolution ratchets up traits from mammal to human] although humans undoubtedly share some of the simpler social transmission mechanisms with other species, the propensity to imitate sets us apart even from chimpanzees...and makes genuine culture posssible" (p 306). We have learned to imitate through symbols to the point that we can imitate our genetic codes and make valuable use of those imitiations. Great book!

Most complete book on animal behavior I have yet encountered.

As a dedicated student of animal behavior I have read a wide variety of texts on the subject but this book stands out in its seamless synthesis of data from ethology/behavioral ecology and comparative/experimental psychology. Previously a student seeking a complete picture of the field of animal behavior would be best served by reading several texts from psychology and biology but here a vast amount of information is presented in a clear, concise, and highly readable manner. The author has in one text presented material that will intrigue but not overwhelm the lay person, yet it will also challenge experts in the field to consider data they might otherwise not have considered.

I wish I could give this book 6 stars. My only regret is not having discovered this one years ago.

An engrossing story of a brutal age....

The saga of Hernando Ruiz - contemptously referred to as the Nazarene for been the offspring of an Arab girl and the Catholic priest who raped her - has all the trappings of an epic - history, adventure, horrendous cruelty, deceit, hate, fortunes made and lost, love, betrayal and revenge. Spain's late 16th - early 17th centuries history is not widely-known therefore the detail may well be inclined to bog down some readers hence I too was tempted to down-grade the review to a 4 star read. However on the positive side the exciting woven tale of Hernando's trials, triumphs and loves completely consumed me for several days so my five star rating serves to acknowledge that. As mentioned by another reviewer Falcones is a consumnate author cut from the same cloth as Follett's "Pillar of the Earth" and I will certainly be following his future books with keen interest.

The story is full of sacrifice, pain and suffer during those sad times of Spanish history. It is a book where you will need to read beyond the words, it is not just a story about historical events, it is an emotional journey, a love story and a beautiful painful one. It is a book that you will evoke raw emotions in you, which you should be prepared for. I definitely would recommend this book.

This book and his other one titled Cathederal of the Sea are in the same league as The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet, very easy to read with good story lines throughout. His histoical account of the Spain is very revealing to someone who before this would have been in the dark about the religous turmoil that the country suffered.

The threats they target include "anti-Christians," conventional Judeo-Christian organizations, the Popish idolatry of Catholicism, anyone who supports racial intermarriage, "mixed-blood" people such as Mexicans, and homosexuals.

This book is far from your standard, disenfranchised rant, partially since the Phineas Priests have been a part of several notorious criminal cases, partially because the movement is rigorous and scholarly as it uses Biblical texts to support out-of-bounds beliefs, and partially because the author, Hoskins, is a real writer who grounded his research with lots of contact with Priests (many of whom could only be reached through the mail due to the fact that they were incarcerated!)

Apparently, this book is the first formal explication of (and endorsement of) the Priesthood. It is much more interested in history than in summarizing current sensational events. Hoskins has been around for a while, being the author of the 1958 book Our White Race.

The Paradox of the "Slave Athletic Celebrity"

Rhoden's aim in this finely written and very readable screed is to explore the African American star athlete's paradoxical dilemma: On one hand, he is worshipped for his athletic prowess and is lavished with millions of dollars. On the other hand, he is beholden to white team owners, white league administrators, and as such is limited to the role of a super-paid lackey.

Some reviewers object to the slavery analogy and the exodus from the plantation to the Promised Land that is heavily used in Rhoden's argument. But Rhoden is correct to point out that the slavery is both spiritual and power-based. Spiritual because too many African American athletes, Rhoden charges, are so busy micromanaging their careers that they have no sense of the broader context, of African American history (one star athlete was shocked with disbelief when he discovered that blacks were once banned from Major League Baseball). Power-based because too many blacks are relegated to "black" roles and forget the larger mission of making more opportunities for blacks in positions of privilege.

Whether or not you agree with Rhoden's analogy, I would argue that the book is nevertheless very readable and entertaining, giving us powerful narratives of how black men, starting with the emancipated slave fighter Tom Molineaux, left America to fight the English champion Tom Cribb and showed whites that blacks' athletic performance defied stereotypes about being dense, ignorant, maladroit, etc. By studying Molineaux, Ali, and other African American greats, Rhoden shows how black athletes who see themselves as symbols of black power help forge the way for other black athletes.

On a personal note, Rhoden, an African American, explains in his own life growing up in Chigaco in the 1950s and 1960s, that sports are a great avenue for learning about race and American history. I am no exception. As a child, I loved Hank Aaron and one day as I read about the way he was bullied and denied white restaurants and hotels, I got a bitter taste of what this country was like for people of color and contemplated the hideous color divide.

Sports is a powerful metaphorical arena for talking about race and Rhoden has done an exemplary job of developing that metaphor in a book that is always engaging and provocative.

Forty Million Dollar Slaves: The Rise, Fall, and Redemption of the Black Athlete

by journalist William C. Rhoden gives a no-holds barred, unadulterated low-down about highly paid black athletes and the juxtaposition of slavery. How did Rhoden come to the conclusion that most Black athletes are highly paid slaves? He starts off methodically detailing the history of African Americans sports dating back to the plantation when slaves were a commodity; property to be used for entertainment as well as labor. Plantation owners would stage fights between slaves from different plantations as weekend amusement. Slaves also became jockeys to plantation owners who owned horses. This became a lucrative business and Black jockeys earned huge payoffs for their owners as well as for themselves on into Reconstruction and into the early 1900s. Blacks dominated horse racing but they were literally squeezed out of the market by greed, jealousy and blatant racism.

Rhoden also details the rise and fall of the Negro Leagues and the tragedy of Arthur "Rube" Foster, who sacrificed everything in the 1930s to organize Black ownership of baseball teams and to give due respect to black baseball players who were unable to play in the major leagues. Ironically, integration saw the end of the Negro Leagues when prime players such as Jackie Robinson and Satchel Paige went to the majors. Rhoden goes on to chronicle the early days of football and basketball. He recounts pioneers in both fields, including Paul Robeson of Rutgers and Raymond Chester of Morgan State and then the Oakland Raiders. It was not until the early 1970s that Southern colleges began recruiting Black football players; at one time the NBA was almost all-white.

Rhoden contends that our young Black athletes, high school, college and professional, lack knowledge of their history in general, and the history of African Americans in sports, in particular. He cites this disconnect for not only the negative, destructive behavior that many of them indulge in but the apathy and lack of political noninvolvement and racial pride. Where are the young Muhammad Alis? But it is the Benjamins that are the prize at the end of the day. Poor inner-city or southern rural Black kids who show exceptional athletic talent become a victim of the "Conveyor Belt." A system, by which they are prepped, coddled and many times exploited at early ages on into high school and college with the main goal to snag the million dollar contracts and lucrative endorsement deals. Who would not want this? But at what cost? Even with all the money Black athletes command, there is still a lacking in coaching, those in top management and almost nil in Black team ownership with the exception of Robert Johnson of the Charlotte Bobcats. Also notable are the few African American sports journalists working to shape and control our image and the lack of exposure to Black agents, attorneys and other specialists to these new multimillionaires.

Kellen Winslow Sr., now an attorney, was a former college football star and played pro for several years and is now in the Hall of Fame. Because he went through the Conveyor Belt, he was able to advocate for his son, Kellen Jr. when the college scouts came courting. He speaks candidly about how college scouts will try to divide the child and parents. He refused to let this happen, often butting heads with his son over where he would go to college. Winslow maintains though that most Black kids do not have a parent, most specifically a father, who will run interference in these matters.

One of the most profound chapters is "The River Jordan: The Dilemma of Neutrality."

Rhoden shows disappointment, hurt, an almost aversion to the beloved Michael Jordan. Jordan's apathy towards Black causes and his neutral stance was a topic of debate when Marcus Book Club met to discuss this book. The members however, came to the agreement that to whom much is given, much is expected and cited Magic Johnson and Dikembe Mutombo as excellent examples of those giving back to their communities. This book is a must-read, especially for young people, both young men and young women and their parents. The history is invaluable and the subject is timely. This is a keeper in one's African American library.

Reassessing the Power of Athletes in Modern America

Sportswriter William C. Rhoden offers in "Forty Million Dollar Slaves" a fascinating portrait of the modern African American athlete. He finds that they are well compensated, but that they are forced to confirm to a longstanding meme in society, which of white dominance and control versus black subservience and servitude. In his estimation, modern "athletes have ridden the coattails of protest movements, benefiting from the sacrifices of the [Paul] Robesons and [Jackie] Robinsons and Jim Browns and Muhammad Alis, but have been content to be symbolic markers of progress rather than activists in their own right, pushing progress forward. They have been unwilling to rock the boat" (p. 217).

Rhoden finds that athletes are processed, like so many manufactured products, homogenized "to get along, they learn by inference about the benevolent superiority of the [owners] and enter into a tacit agreement to let the system operate without comment." They learn "to accept the power structure as it is. The young, talented athlete learns about the value of cultivating the far-reaching range of range of affiliations, connections, and alliances that can make the athlete's...journey smooth; he also learns about the kinds of associations and ideas that can make it quite miserable or even terminate it altogether" (p. 194). They learn early on to keep their mouths shut, uttering trite clich�s and little more. That is one of the reasons why when an athlete articulates sophisticated criticism of the status quo, regardless of the purpose, it is such a delight to journalists and such a threat to owners and others in the power structure.

From the boxing rings of the early twentieth century with such individuals as Jack Johnson through Jesse Owens, Paul Robeson, and Jackie Robinson to the more recent experiences of Arthur Ashe, Mohammed Ali, John Carlos, Tommie Smith, Kellen Winslow, and John Thompson, "Forty Million Dollar Slaves" explores how everything about modern sports is built around an unwritten agreement that in return for unchallenged authority and excellence on the court or field the black athlete receives wealth and fame. Few question the structure of sports and society, and some even revel in it. Rhoden holds up Michael Jordan as the classic example of one who has been celebrated and enriched through this arrangement. When asked about his response to overt racism expressed by a candidate for Congress in 1990, Jordon responded, "Republicans buy sneakers, too" (p. 201). He did not want to jeopardize his deal with Nike. In contrast, those who question this situation set themselves up for marginalization
Rhoden's work is powerful, provocative, and perceptive. His characterization of the state of sports, the place of athletes, and the nature of the business of sports is illuminating. His conclusion that many African American athletes are willing participants in this system is troubling. I recommend "Forty Million Dollar Slaves" as a thought-provoking treatise on a major aspect of sports and society.

When the characteristics of powder nanocomposites are calculated, it is also very important to take into account the interaction of the nanoelements since the changes in their original shapes and sizes in the interaction process and during the formation of the nanocomposite can lead to a significant change in its properties and a cardinal structural rearrangement. In addition, the studies show the appearance of the processes of the ordering and self-assembling leading to a more organized form of a nanosystem. The above phenomena play an important role in nanotechnological processes. They allow nanotechnologies to be developed for the formation of nanostructures by the self-assembling method (which is based on self-organizing processes) and building up complex spatial nanostructures consisting of different nanoelements.

The study of the above dependences based on the mathematical modeling methods requires the solution of the aforementioned problem at the atomic level. This requires large computational aids and computational time, which makes the development of economical calculation methods urgent. The objective of this volume is the development of such a technique in various nanosystems.

Theodosia Burr Alston was a brilliant, independent, highly-educated and freethinking woman in an age which valued none of those traits in females. She was born June 21, 1783 in Albany, New York, the daughter of prominent attorney Aaron Burr (1756-1836) and his wife, the former Mrs. Theodosia Prevost (d. 1794), a widow. Young Theodosia spent most of her unmarried life in New York City with her charismatic, influential father, who had distinguished himself as an officer in the Revolutionary War. There he served under Col. Benedict Arnold and became a member of General George Washington's inner circle. After her mother died when Theodosia was eleven, she became her father's closest confidante and the mistress of Richmond Hill, his New York country estate. A child prodigy whose education was designed by her adoring and demanding father, Theodosia spoke Latin, French, German, and read Greek by the age of twelve.

For Aaron Burr, providing his little girl with an extraordinary education was a lifelong obsession. But Burr's desire to rear a superior woman-child went far beyond mere education. Ovid’s saying, "time devours all things," was never more true than when applied to Theodosia Burr Alston. During her life, her friends, family, and acquaintances knew her as a vivacious, mischievous little girl; a charming, intelligent young woman; a tender, loving wife; a caring, attentive mother; and a devoted daughter. In addition, she was trained by her obsessive and loving father as an intellectual prodigy and educational role model for women of the future. On the day of her marriage in 1801, Theodosia, aged seventeen years, seven months, and nine days, was without question the best educated woman in the United States. However, she was not being prepared solely for adulthood, marriage, and motherhood. Burr was grooming her to become a president, queen, or empress.

This book was written to restore to the daylight the flesh-and-blood Theodosia, the girl who giggled on her mother’s knee; the thirteen-year-old who presided alone over a formal dinner for a powerful Indian chief; the young woman who pinned back the ears of her overbearing fianc� only days before their wedding; and the elegant lady who floated gracefully down the Ohio River on a flatboat, headed, she believed, on a one-way-trip to become Theodosia I, Empress of Mexico. From South Carolina on August 1, 1809, a slender, delicate young woman with large, expressive, dark brown eyes and dark auburn hair picked up her pen to profess her adoration for the man who was the center of her universe. Theodosia Burr Alston, who had just turned twenty-six, wrote to her twice-disgraced father, Aaron Burr, then in self-imposed European exile, "I witness your extraordinary fortitude with new wonder at every new misfortune. Often, after reflecting on this subject, you appear to me so superior, so elevated above all other men, I contemplate you with such a strange mixture of humility, admiration, love, and pride, that very little superstition would be necessary to make me worship you as a superior being, such enthusiasm does your character excite in me. When I afterward revert to myself, how insignificant do my best qualities appear. My vanity would be greater if I had not been placed so near you; and yet my pride is our relationship. I had rather!

not live than not be the daughter of such a man." It was the perfect match. Aaron Burr was Theodosia’s god; Theodosia was Burr’s prodigy and vision. They were far more than soulmates. Theodosia and her father were emotional Siamese twins who occupied separate bodies but shared a single heart.

The real story about Theodosia and her father, Aaron Burr

Richard N. Cote, the author of this biography of Aaron Burr's daughter certainly did meticulous research. Add to that his skill as a storyteller, and this fascinating woman's short and sad life becomes real. It's not just her story, however, that comes alive. It is the story of the early days of America. The author traces her roots back to the 13 colonies, adding to the background of this family and its place in history. Living during those times meant living with medical problems and risking death from a wide variety of causes. For example, two of Aaron Burr's relatives died as a result of smallpox vaccinations.
Aaron Burr, a vice president of the United States under Thomas Jefferson, is known primarily for his duel with Alexander Hamilton. After that he fell into disfavor and had grandiose dreams of invading Mexico and making himself emperor. He later spent time in exile and finally returned to the United States to live to a ripe old age.
Burr had grand plans for his daughter Theodosia, his only child born in 1783. Unlike the women in her generation, he had her educated as boys were then. By the time she was 11, she was studying classical literature and speaking French. That's around the time her mother died and she took on the responsibility of running her father's New York home. She was only 18 when she married Joseph Alston, a South Carolina planter. Soon afterwards her son was born. The birth, however, was a difficult one and for the rest of her life, she was in constant pain.
The book centers on the relationship between Aaron Burr and his daughter. They were extremely close and their letters reveal that he even would write to her about his amorous adventures. After her marriage, they visited often, usually for months at a time. Transportation was difficult in those days. It took weeks to travel from South Carolina to New York. Even a sea voyage between these two places took five or six days. It was on one of those trips, when Theodosia was only 29 years old, sickly and mourning the recent death of her 10-year-old son from a fever, that she was lost at sea. It was a tragedy whose mystery still haunts history. There are rumors of pirates and her having to walk a plank. But nothing was ever proved.
I loved this book, looked forward to picking it up each night. It brought me to an age very different from the world we live in today. It was just as complex though, given the context of the times. There were intrigues and war and disease. And there was love and pain and loss. I also felt I got to know both Aaron Burr and Theodosia as more than just historical figures. And my understanding of American history sure was enriched. I thank Mr. Cote for writing this book and making a major contribution by preserving this story. Highly recommended.

Enlightening!

I entirely disagree with the reader below me. (Everyone owned slaves back then, except for, notably, Alexander Hamilton, who hated slavery, and yes, he wasn't the only one. But still, the focus of the book was Theodosia, not Aaron.)
I came across Theodosia while I was watching the PBS Home Video "The Duel" (which I recommend if you are interested in Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, the duel itself, or politics in that time period). I wanted to know more about her and purchased this book. I'm glad I did! This biography seems more like a novel because of the incredible, fast-paced journey it leads you on into the past. I especially liked the last few chapters, when the author explored Theodosia's possible fates and the "mystery of the Nag's Head portrait." This whole book never had a boring moment, so if you are interested in this great yet unknown woman or her infamous father, read this book ASAP!

I Couldn't Put It Down

What an in depth and at times riveting account of Theodosia, the beautiful and very gifted daughter of Vice President and scheming traitor, Aaron Burr. This is a story that has been told before but never brilliantly as in Mr. Cote's sweeping tale. The author brings to life the romantic and tragic heroine, Theodosia, so vividly that the reader truly feels her joys and pain. From her privileged upbringing by a father who was a brilliant but flawed man to her marriage into South Carolina's wealthiest family and eventually to her mysterious death at age 28, this is a story that carries us through the ballrooms and political intrigue of the 18th and early 19th Century. Theodosia, the most well educated woman of her time, was destined by her ambitious father to be empress of Mexico in a scheme both treasonous and ultimately ruinous. Theodosia vanished at sea in 1812 leaving behind a haunting portrait that washed up on a North Carolina beach and a story so intriguing that it lingers in the heart and mind long after the book is finished.
