Jim Casada, the editor and compiler of this work, was a university history professor before taking early retirement to write full time on hunting, fishing, and other outdoor-related topics. He is senior editor of Sporting Classics magazine and a contributor for Outdoor Life, Cabela’s Outfitter Journal, and American Rifleman. Casada is a past president of both the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association and the Outdoor Writers Association of America. He has written, edited, or contributed to more than thirty books, including Africa’s Greatest Hunter (1998), The American Rifle (2005), and A Southern Sportsman (2010).

I am a fan of Robert Ruark's writings. Seven years ago, I read "Horn of the Hunter" before embarking on an African hunting safari. I very much enjoyed the book and proceeded to read in rapid succession "Something of Value," "Uhuru," "Use Enough Gun," "Poor No More," "The Honey Badger," "The Old Man and the Boy," "Robert Ruark's Africa," "The Lost Classics" and "A View From a Tall Hill: Robert Ruark in Africa."

Many of Ruark's writings such as "Horn of the Hunter" are stories of his own hunts and experiences. And much of his fiction is semi-autobiographical, such as the main characters in "Poor No More" and "The Honey Badger." But one wonders to what extent Ruark has embellished. This book is great because the author, having worked as Ruark's secretary for twelve years, knew him well. This is a first hand account of Ruark's life including his great drive and his destructive faults.

The book "A View From a Tall Hill: Robert Ruark in Africa" is another recent biographical account, although it focuses mostly on Ruark's hunting and other adventures in Africa. It is also a good read for a Ruark fan. Its author, Terry Wieland is a hunter and gun aficionado, which gives him experience and insight that Ritchie does not have. But Wieland did not know Ruark, which is Ritchie's advantage. Both books are good and will be enjoyed by Ruark fans.

Beyond the words

I was overjoyed to read this book and in finding out more about a wonderful writer. The best part is the book is written by Mr. Ritchie. Alan Ritchie was the personal secretary or Robert Ruark for twelve years and was present in both business and the personal affairs of Mr. and Mrs. Ruark. The "introduction" of the book is written by the outdoor writer and editor of this book Jim Casada and is most important in providing to the reader with the "who is" Mr. Ritchie, the relationship to Mr. Ruark and what and how this book even made it into print. Another great addition to this book is provided by Harry Selby the professional hunter, safari guide and friend to Mr. Ruark. Mr. Shelby offers a personal reflection how he reads "Bob Ruark" the man on safari and in the friendship between them that developed in time.
To read a book written by Ruark is one thing to read a book about Ruark's life and the times that shaped his experiences is another, so to the individual wanting to met the author I recommend this book! The real bonus for me in the book is the insight to the time before syndicated TV when the news and views of the world were paper bound and the relationship of Ruark and Hemingway in each man life. I was wonderfully surprised!

Our Minds---Rethinking Time

Joyce Meyer is a talented, dedicated warrior. She has undergone many of the same trials that each person has endured. When you study her insights you really start understanding what you say is how you live. When I was younger, a stay at home mom, I would say that my family was just like the soap opera All My Children. We had one crisis after another. Then I listened to Mrs. Meyer's teaching. I quit making the negative statements and watched my family return to peace. The Battle is in our minds.. The weapons are the Words that we think then speak. One has to change how you think so that the speech you hear will lift upward, not squash you.

I decided to read this book after feeling overwhelmed with worry and anxiety. I am so happy i came across this book. It really helps me focus on the positive in each situation. It is nice to read scripture along with learning positive thinking. I also had my husband read along with me. This book should be in every home.

I am so grateful for this book! My sister recommended it to me and when I got it I couldn't put it down and I cried almost all the way through. It spoke to me so very deeply and I took note of all the scriptures that confirmed what I was reading. I have since been slowly letting go of things that have bugged and bothered me for YEARS. I am slowly, daily, reminding myself to have the MIND OF CHRIST. Life has become less lonely and I look forward with new hope each day for a good future...not thinking all the time of just growing old and not looking for an exciting fruitful future!!
Thank the Lord for Joyce Meyer's ministry and for showing me a way OUT of my bad mind set!! I have recommended it to many people since reading it.

Mckenna techniques work for me.

Since I started the Paul Mckenna Techniques, Last year in July, I have been constantly losing weight. on the average of 3-3.5 pounds a month. I have a 12 year old and this is the first time since his birth, I have been successful in losing real weight, not just water weight, without ever going hungry. In fact, the most important part of the program is never getting hungry to the point of getting irritable . According to the research, the number one cause of weight gain in the 1st world countries especially America is dieting, emotional eating the second. But all my life I have been an emotional eater and didn't realize it until mckenna explained it to his readers world wide. We have a billion dollar weight loss industry and we are still the fattest people on earth...why? simply because diets don't work. And his hypnosis techniques are great for calming you down so you don't overeat when stressed. This is not a diet and yes you have heard a lot of diets claiming it's not a diet but any program that restricts you from eating any thing, even a spice or a vegetable is a diet. period. this program lets you eat any thing as long as you like it. It has changed my life for ever, for better..Thanks, Paul Mckenna.

Update:06/07/14... Still losing weight..did not gain back any. Although, the weight loss dropped to a pound a month as I started going to college and didn't have enough time to listen to the CD regularly. Even after a year, you need to listen to the CD at least 3 times a week to keep your motivation up. Back listening to CD. I am writing this update so if you are tired of dieting and emotional eating, please try.

Former Skeptic

This is the third Paul McKenna hypnosis book/cd/dvd I've purchased. While I really believe in the power of hypnosis, I was still skeptical that it would work, long term, on a practical level. It's been two months and it worked for me. I switch between the I Can Make You Thin, Freedom From Emotional Eating, and the Hypnotic Gastric Band cds at night before I go to sleep and it's amazing. I've paired this up with an eating plan that works for me. I'm actually starting to want to be more active (go swimming, walking, etc) and that just wasn't me.

I find I'm also calmer and handle the stresses of my day to day life better. I've been on "diets" before and have been successful, but this time, the weight is coming off and it truly seems effortless (although it's not). My portion sizes are 1/2 of what they used to be and I find myself eating very slowly. I enjoy my food a lot more now and I find I'm not only drawn to foods that are healthy, but that I didn't really consider before. It's odd. The best part for me is that I don't crave sweets...at all! I know this won't be normal for everyone, but for me that's something. When i would go on "diets" before, by the end of the first week, I would want chocolate or berries or something. With this change in my eating habit and the combination of the hypnosis cds, I'm content with a spoonfull of natural peanut butter as "dessert".

This program did for me what it said it would do. It's helped me change my focus to enjoying what I eat, stopping when I'm full, realizing what true fullness feels like, and that I don't have to worry about my next meal because it will be there when I'm ready for it. For you emotional eaters, that's a biggie!

Hopeful-Easy to try

Wish it came with a CD as it is not so easy to access the download from Hay House. Still in the process of working the entire routine in to my daily day.
The writing is simple and the tapes are soothing to listen to. Just need to do it everyday for two weeks. I have had success with a previous book and CD by Paul McKenna and hope this one id effective too. Withthe last one I never felt like I did anything different but others noticed my positive changes.

Eamon P. Doherty, PhD, CCE, SSCP, CPP, is an associate professor and the Cybercrime Training Lab director at Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU), New Jersey. Dr. Doherty is a member of the High Tech Crimes Investigative Association, ASIS International, the FBI Infraguard, the American College of Forensic Examiners Institute, the FDU Digital Forensics Club, the IACSP, and the American Society of Digital Forensics & eDiscovery. Dr. Doherty has also assisted with some law enforcement cell phone investigations and is the chairman of the New Jersey Regional Homeland Security Technology Committee.

Dr. Doherty previously worked for Morris County Government in their M.I.S./I.S.D. section. Presently, Dr. Doherty has developed and taught many continuing education classes for FDU on the subjects of cell phone forensics, PDA forensics, and digital camera forensics.

Valuable hands-on guide

With billions of handheld devices in use worldwide, it is imperative that digital forensics investigators and others know how to ensure that the information contained in them, can be legally preserved if needed.

In Digital Forensics for Handheld Devices, author Eamon Doherty provides an invaluable resource on how one can obtain data, examine it and prepare it as evidence for court. One of the reasons many computer crime cases fail to be prosecuted is that the evidence was not properly handled and could therefore not be admitted into court.

Once of the first things a defense attorney will do in a computer crime case is to attack how the digital evidence was obtained and preserved. In far too many cases, it was done incorrectly and the evidence, no matter that it may be a smoking gun, can't be admitted into court. The case then is dismissed, to the chagrin of the victim.

The books 8 chapters of nearly 300 pages are densely packed text, where Doherty brings significant real-world experience to every chapter. As the cybercrime training lab director at Fairleigh Dickinson University, he brings both an academic formality in additional to real-world experience in this highly tactical guide.

Chapter 1 details cell phone forensics. After a brief introduction to the history of the cell phone, it details the entire inner workings of a cell phone. The chapter also details differences in cell phones worldwide. An important fact is that many Asian countries have cell phones available 12-18 months before they appear in the US. With that, American forensic investigators need to be cognizant of this when entering into an investigation.

The chapter includes an overview of the Susteen Secure View application which is an extremely powerful tool for the mobile phone forensic investigator. Besides that tool, in each chapter, Doherty lists many tools that provide specific assistance to the topic at hand. The book is worth it for those listings alone.
Chapter 2 is similar to the previous chapter except this is about digital camera forensics. The chapter provides a detailed overview of how digital cameras operate and how the underlying hardware works. The chapter includes an extremely comprehensive overview of seemingly every tool available to investigate images on a digital camera.

The chapter also includes a number of fascinating case studies on how to effectively perform a forensics analysis of a digital camera. It concludes with an observation that when considering a career in forensics, as fascinating as it is; it may not be for everyone.

Doherty notes that as a forensics investigator, the examiner is often exposed to disturbing material. He quotes a report that studied investigators from over 500 agencies who had been exposed to child pornography during investigation of crime involving child exportation. The report noted an alarming 35% of the participants had problems arising from work exposure to child pornography.

Chapter 5 provides an extremely detailed look at forensics investigation on a corporate network. Throughout the book, Doherty stresses the need for effective chain of custody and other issues to preserve digital evidence. It is imperative to preserve the integrity of the digital evidence obtained from the time it was seized until it is presented in court.

To facilitate this, the book states a best practice to use checklists to ensure nothing is forgotten. The importance of checklists has been detailed in The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right where author Atul Gawande makes a compelling case for the use of checklists.

As to evidence and checklists, Doherty writes that once the evidence is obtained, a chain of custody form should be filled out. Each time the evidence is copied, processed, or transported, it should be documented on the chain of custody form. If others receive a copy of the evidence for prosecution or defense purposes, they too should sign for it. This is an imperative if it expected that the evidence would end up in court or be used for human resources purposes. But at the corporate setting detailed in chapter 5, that same level of diligence is not necessarily required.

Chapter 5 also has overviews of nearly 50 different forensic tools for every imaginable purpose.
While the book has exploratory and technical overviews on many tools and numerous case studies, this is not an introductory text on the subject. It is meant for someone with a technical background that is looking for a technical reference to gain competence on the topic of digital forensics.

The only lacking of the book is that while the author is an expert on the topic and the tools, the writing style is one that screams out for an editor. The text suffers from run on sentences and repetition of defining the same acronym, in addition to other readability issues. The book is pervasive its use of passive voice that can be annoying to many readers. It is hoped that the second edition of this book will be updated with the current tools of the time and a good re-editing of the text to ensure its readability doesn't suffer.

Aside from the grammatical issues, for those looking for a very hands-on guide to gain proficiency on the topic, Digital Forensics for Handheld Devices is a valuable reference. Dr. Eamon Doherty has a unique perspective in that he has academic, law enforcement and very practical experience, which is manifest in every chapter.

The book reads like a blog. There is a lot of really good information that is sandwiched between irrelevant or unnecessary information. For example, Chapter 2 of his book contains an unnecessarily long passage about batteries for cameras. Obviously, this information was factually correct but it seemed highly unnecessary. If a forensic investigator or student needed this oddly detailed information about batteries, he or she may need to change professions. He also references website content, which I find to be in poor taste because that content may not always be there. Sometimes he anecdotal references conversations he has had at conventions, in the classroom, and in the field, which is nice for a blog or lecture but I feel that it is out of place in a textbook.

He also discusses areas he would like to change forensic education. I do understand his concern and he is definitely right about how there is a really good possibility in seeing disturbing content on people's hard drives. It is a good topic to discuss but this book shouldn't be the place for it, or minimally not in the middle of the book. These random topic discussions are interspersed throughout the book and makes the book seem like he is rambling in multiple directions.

Ultimately I rated this book a 2 because it lacked direction. There is good content, but it could have been delivered more succinctly.

Foreword

Just as there are two sides to every coin, there are two sides to each WebSphere project. And just as you can't have one side of a coin without another, you can't leave off one half of your WebSphere project and expect the other to succeed. I'm speaking, of course, about the two major roles involved in J2EE projects—not only application developers (or J2EE programmers) but also the role that's most often overlooked—the application deployer.

The bookshelves of any large bookstore will be well laden with books on how to develop code for J2EE application servers. In fact, most bookstores will have several that I've contributed to. It's easy for a developer to find a good, reliable source of information on how to do his job. However, that's not quite the case with a WebSphere deployer.

Why is this true? Well, I believe that one reason is that even though J2EE has always defined the different roles like deployer and system administrator, the emphasis has always been on the development role because it is the one that the authors and readers of the J2EE specs identify with the most.

This book is one of the first efforts to address this inconsistency. You see, the issue is that deployment is difficult—in many ways, planning and executing a successful application deployment is as difficult as developing the application itself. There are a myriad of issues to consider—is your topology sufficient to meet your application performance needs? Are both your network and applications secured from external intrusion and unauthorized internal access? Do you have a plan for managing upgrades to your application and to the software (application servers, databases, third-party libraries) on which your application depends? If you don't have the right answer for any of these questions, your application will not meet your user's needs, no matter how well it's written. Unfortunately, WebSphere system administrators and deployers often get the short end of the stick when educational resources are assigned. While it's often easy in many development shops to obtain authorization for a class on J2EE development, it's often harder to find a good class on administration and harder to justify the expense. Thus, there exists an urgent need for guides like the book you now hold.

This book is a wonderful resource; not only does it contain detailed instructions on how to carry out the real work of building and deploying applications, but more importantly, it also provides a wealth of information on best practices for application deployment.

I have immense respect for the authors of this book—they are the true experts in their field. When someone needs an answer on application security, topology design, or deployment, no group is more qualified to provide it than the authors assembled for this book. They've done a great job of capturing that knowledge here, and I'm sure you'll benefit from it. A Must Have for WebSphere Administrators

Finally, we have in one reference, all of the important considerations that must be taken into account, when deploying and administering WebSphere applications. The book is based on the deep subject matter expertise of the authors, but more importantly, also on their significant engagement experience over the last 5 years with WebSphere clients. While the book is sufficiently rich in technical detail, so as to appeal to even the most experienced WebSphere administrators, the authors write with an engaging style that can provide knowledge and insight for the most novice of readers. Finally, there is much in the way of J2EE best practice that would well serve J2EE developers.
