A Wonderful Composition With Valuable Information!

Portrait Kerala by Aruna Nambiar is a wonderful composition which provided me every piece of information that I need to know about Kerala and I must say that this book made me enjoy my whole leisure time. I am really thankful to Saibal Das who has been very dedicated in providing clear, attractive and colorful pictures and this book flows with pictures along with its discussion under the topic. The book covers many aspects of Kerala such as its historical background, culture, geographical features and nature. This book can be considered as a supportive tourist guide as well as it includes weather conditions, monsoonal effects and tourist attractions in Kerala. The political state of this land is described in this book proving a informative approach to the day today life style in Kerala. This book mentions places with architectural importance, cultural pageants, festivals and faiths of people. Kerala comprises attractive arts-mainly dancing is covered in this book and I am really excited to see the things mentioned in this book with my own eyes. I am really planning to enjoy my next vacation in Kerala.

A nice overall view

This book is a nice 'overall' on Kerala- It balances a good amount of Kerala and the culture of its people, its history, and its geography.

This book includes pictures, which are a nice touch, that are of high quality and relevant to what's being discussed at the time they are introduced, rather than random pictures here and there. Anything from flowers on the side of the road, to the natives, to a friendly picture of a squirrel with his nut made the passing from section to section quite nice. The content itself was very well written and thorough- it left me with no unanswered questions and a better understanding of Kerala and it's culture.

All in all, this is a nice read- regardless of whether you read it because you want to travel there, you're researching it for a school project, or because you'd like to have something a little more interesting to talk about than what your baby ate today at the dinner table.

Insightful and written well

The book covers many aspects of the unique state of Kerala, touching upon the distinct beauty of the environment, the people that inhabit the land and their respective cultural customs including holidays, religions, art & architecture, and cuisines common to the land.
I found the rich history of Kerala to be especially interesting, as well as the geography, which from what I’ve gathered so far seems to be a big influence in the aforementioned. I must also note that the pictures in the book are wonderful and do the text much justice.

Well recommended for those new to portal development

In just having recently completed a development project creating portlets for the first time with a Java Portlet Specification 2.0 (JSR 286) compliant portal server, I hope I can provide some insight into the effectiveness of this book, since I used it to hit the ground running. Simply put, I agree with some of the other reviews here that this book is very well put together. The progression of content that the author provides from one chapter to the next is effective for those newly tackling portal development. As a consultant in such a situation, I especially appreciated Chapter 1 ("Introducing Portals and Portlets"), Chapter 2 ("The Portlet Lifecycle"), Chapter 3 ("Portlet 2.0 API: Portlet Objects and Container-runtime Options"), Chapter 6 ("Using the Portlet Tag Library"), Chapter 7 ("Getting Started with Spring Portlet MVC"), and Chapter 11 ("Communicating with Other Portlets"). The UML sequence diagrams that the author provides greatly aided the material. And believe it or not, even at almost 600-pages the author even thankfully left out the fluff that one can unfortunately often expect in other developer texts of this genre.

That said, however, potential readers need to be aware of what this book does and does not provide. Unless the reader is using Liferay, the most frequently referenced portal server in this book, they should not expect to be able to get up to speed with any specific portal server. My target portal server, for example, was IBM WebSphere Portal 6.1.0, and this specific portal server is only mentioned in passing a few times by the author. Usage of the XML Configuration Interface, commonly known as XMLAccess, for example, which is a requirement when using the portal server in my project environment, was not covered. Personalization rules and managing portal pages was also not covered. As with other Java specifications, much is left up to implementers with regard to what is under the covers, but as with application servers, portal servers also provide features that sit outside these specifications. While I did not purchase this text expecting that the WebSphere implementation would be covered, as a novice in this space I also was not aware how much I would be dependent on product specific features. Well recommended guide and reference for those new to portal development, especially with Spring Portlet MVC.

Best Portlet Development book period!!!

Read this book first, then download the documentation for the portlet container you plan to write on.

I have read many books on portal development, and Liferay development in particular and this book is by far the best for a serious Java developer wanting to increase their portal development skill in areas that can be applied across portal containers. Many of the books out now are little more than an introduction to the portal container or an extension to the admin Guide. This book goes where others don't. It actually has examples that the reader can follow step by step, without the many headaches the other books require. The source code is well written and displays many nice features of Spring as well as the portlet spec. This book puts the "in Action" back in the brand many of us once relied on for step by step IT instruction.

This book will make you a better developer in the Spring MVC space and get you proficient in the portal space as well. The book covers validation, security, localization, caching, Portal Admin, portlet tag library, inter portlet communication, Spring Portlet MVC, Hibernate, Spring annotations, integrating portlets with databases, personalization of portlets, Ajax portlets, iFrame portlets, wicket portlets, WSRP, building a custom portal. It is both a great learning tool for portlet development and great polisher for Spring skills as well.

If you do any portlet development or are thinking of doing any you need this book. If you are working with Liferay at all then this book is a MUST HAVE for you, even more than the admin guide.

I am working in portal/portlet development for the last 2 years and I was looking for a good Portal book for the last 2 years or so. This is the first major book for portal and portlet technology. After reading this I would like to congratulate author as he has given a book which is helpful for new as well as experienced portal/portlet developers.This book gives a complete insight of Portlet technology as well as Spring Portlet MVC framework with good code examples.The author has covered almost everything necessary for portlet development e.g. portal framework explanation, various frameworks that can be used for portlet development and advanced topics like Ajax integration with portlet technology with examples including several JavaScript libraries and Ajax frameworks like DOJO,DWR.
This book is a must have for all Portlet developers.

When my son was born, I went looking for the perfect automotive children's book to share my love of cars with him. I couldn't find what I was looking for, so I decided to create it.
The Little Red Racing Car is a father and son story about a very special car, a real car, the Maserati� 300S. It was a winning racing car in the 50's and a favorite of a legendary driver by the name of Sir Stirling Moss.
While the story itself is fiction, it is full of truth and history. Part way through writing the book, Sir Stirling even lent his name to the story - and incredible kindness.
And inside the back cover, you'll find a completely accurate blueprint drawing of the 300S, which I've created complete with the specs of the car, and even the long lost mark of Carrosserie Fantuzzi, the Italian coach-builder that made the bodies for Maserati. The Fantuzzi mark is a story of its own, one that took weeks of research to track down, even with the help of the world's leading Maserati expert.

Made in USA, great for car nuts!

I've been looking for a book to share with my newborn son and found this - I was skeptical at first someone could make a father-son story for a car nut like myself, but once I saw how enthusiastic the author was, I had to have it. Additionally, the author took the time to advertise that the book is printed in the USA on US sourced paper. A double win! The book has a great story and illustrations. It even comes with some stickers and a "Certificate of Title" for the books owner. Really creative! Lastly, I first saw about this book on a Facebook advertisement - after commenting how thrilled I was about ordering the book, the author personally thanked me. You don't see that type of service often these days and it doesn't go unnoticed.

Entertained with my nostalgia

I remember how pleased I was when race cars looked like this. I enjoyed them in my imagination, since I was too young to drive. When I was around
even more exciting vehicles, my enthusiasm waned. Race cars like this still
spark my imagination in ways that later ones do not. Same with the later
race drivers. Finally, I shared my enthusiasm with my father.

What boy hasn't daydreamed of driving a racecar? How about finding such a car in the barn when your family moves?
What father hasn't envisioned a father-son joint hobby, where the car is restored, everything works and there's no disagreements, ever?
The illustrations are fun, there's real racing history subtly taught, and it's a car guy's dream. If only life was really like this....

great information

This is the third bob Frissell book I've read, and it's my favorite. You Are A Spiritual Being has so much wisdom in it. With great clarity and compassion, Frissell explains what we truly are, which is not the story we've been told.

In a nutshell, we are immortal, spiritual, holographic pieces of our creator. Just as we give pieces of ourselves to create our children, so too does God give pieces of himself(or herself if you will) to create children to enjoy. Since we are pieces of God, we have the ability to grow into grand creators, making the world anything we wish it to be.

We've chosen to take on material bodies to experience the material world on the third dimension, the lowest dimension you can experience and still have consciousness. We humans have decided to dip down into the lowest level to see if we can bring light into the darkest part of creation. Kind of amazing when you think about it, and very powerful.

Frissell practices `rebirthing' and he talks in his first book about how to breathe right. While I dismissed this part of his first and second book, he explains in the third book that emotions are energy, and they're taken care of by the body.

The body needs oxygen to move the energy through the body. If emotions get stuck, they can close us down emotionally and harm us physically. Just as a pond of water can become stagnate with a constant inflow of clean water, so too can our bodies start to break down because of the toxins that become trapped.

I've read that cancer needs an acid/low oxygen environment to flourish, so I guess this makes sense. I've even seen acid on a microscope and it has sharp edges which seems to make sense. But back to the book, Frissell explains so much in this book that's hard to get it all in.

Here's a sample: "If you identify yourself as a powerless victim, it is as if you were giving a command to the universe to behave just as if this were so. The result: the entire universe conforms to that command and says yes to it, and you receive confirmation from it that you have no power. You get what you put out . . . That's how we create our reality." 719 of 1955 Kindle

I always loved the part about the war between Michael and Lucifer. Michael represents the right side of the brain. We're all one, let's create using our minds. Lucifer wanted to try something different. He wanted to create outside of himself, so he uses technology or the ego/left side of the brain.

Obviously we in the West are using our left brains to create our world, and we've all but wiped out the cultures that used their right brains. It's the advent of writing that started us down the Luciferian side of life. Mars used technology until they no longer could use their right side and lost their emotional side, their connection to God. They blew up their planet and came here thousands of years ago and have been a thorn in our side ever since. Our job is to love them into submission.

The title says it all

The title is worth the price of the book. "You are a Spiritual Being Having a Human Experience." If you know and appropriate this one sentence it will change your whole life. This book written in Bob's inimical clear concise style is a good book to wet one's appetite for Bob's other two books, "Nothing In This book is True, But it's Exactly How Things Are"(15th Anniversary Edition) and the companion to it "Something in This Book is True"(Second edition). I read this book first and then had to read Nothing and Something. A very important book to help us wake up and get into Unity Consciousness and emotional healing and get ready for our and Mother Earth's Ascenstion. I highly recommend you get this book and read it as soon as you can.

This book is small and stellar, just like a white dwarf. I strongly suggest the works "Nothing in this book is true, but it's exactly how things are" and "Something in this book is true..." also by the same author. We are, after all, spiritual beings having a human experience!
I loved it.

Could actually make your score go down.

I am a math tutor with years of experience helping students prepare for standardized tests. The Princeton Review generally does an excellent job with its off-the-shelf products, even for smaller tests like the SSAT/ISEE, so I thought it would be fine to try out their materials for the new GRE. Their main prep book is fine and seems generally up to the usual PR standard.

This book? Not so much.

First, the math sections are filled with errors. While working through the drills with my student, we found typically about one error per drill. It varies somewhat and I haven't really kept track, but I'd estimate the error rate at 10% or so, meaning 1 in 10 problems has some kind of mistake. Books with zero errors are exceedingly rare, but this error rate is orders of magnitude above what is acceptable. For the THIRD edition of this book to fail so miserably at basic error checks is simply inexcusable.

We've encountered problems that a) are written so that the right answer isn't listed (one problem would have required relatively advanced trigonometry to solve as written because of an inverted ratio); b) indicate the wrong answer in the answer key; c) make math mistakes in the answers & explanations; and d) have more than one right answer, but aren't written as an all-that-apply question. And they're not above mixing and matching: some problems have multiple mistakes. I recall one in particular that was set up as a standard multiple-choice problem but had three right answers. The answer list summary had the correct answer choices, but the detailed explanation listed a fourth right answer before explaining in detail why only three answers were correct. That was a blatant example, but some of them are much more insidious.

And how do you trust the verbal practice when you know the math is fraught with problems? In the verbal sections, it can be much more difficult to recognize when a question is "wrong". It's not that the book gets vocabulary definitions wrong. It's more that the book is supposed to teach you to think like the test makers when you're answering a question, but all the mistakes elsewhere make you question whether they know themselves. For example: one of the reading comprehension passages was on a scientific topic. That's fine -- the test passages can be about anything. And most of the questions were fine. But one of them asked the reader to make an inference that was impossible to justify without knowing science facts above and beyond what the passage provided. It was quite subtle, and the only reason I'm completely sure that this inference was out of line is that I'm a scientist myself. Before we went over it together, my student just thought he had failed at the question.

This sort of thing is enough to destroy a student's confidence. If you don't have a tutor sitting by your side to work through the problems and point out typos, you will be lucky if frustration and wasted time are the only consequences of doing the drills in this book. Once you have the basic skills you need to do well on the test, confidence is arguably the most important thing you can bring to the test with you. How much is your score going to drop if you've relied on this book and are therefore left wondering if you can do simple arithmetic?

It's not just all that extra time you'll spend triple-checking even the easy questions. All that anxiety-triggered adrenaline diminishes your cognitive abilities. A test prep book is supposed to ease your anxiety about the test. If it instead increases it, it's affecting your ability to perform at a neuro-chemical level. And I'm not exaggerating. The psychological aspect of standardized tests is every bit as important as the part based on what you learned in school.

In summary: although the prospect of 1,000+ practice problems is tantalizing, the mistakes in this book taint every single one of them. Worse, the insidious errors could easily torpedo your confidence, which could be disastrous on test day.

Errors!

The ETS doesn't offer their free downloadable software for Mac (which is already pretty bad), so I decided to order this book. I reasoned that getting the prep questions directly from the testmakers would be best, especially given that the test recently changed, and there don't seem to be many third-party study guides out there. This was also the cheapest of the available updated options. Well. I certainly learned my lesson. The book is awful. There are basically no real studying tips (and if I read "plug in a nice, happy number" one more time I might scream), and the answer key has enough mistakes that it's difficult to know when I'm really wrong. I thought it was my poor math skills until I caught a blatant mistake (they didn't read the question carefully enough, I guess). Perhaps the book was rushed out too quickly, but it's sloppy.

Avoid This book

You know I promised my self I would not make this an irate review, however this book is beyond frustrating. Dearest, Princeton was this book edited by ferret? I mean that in all sincerity.

Vocab:
The Text Completions are riddled with spelling errors and sometimes don't even match the answer key. The Reading Comprehension is mediocre there is more wiggle room in some of the answers then worm has in the New York City sewers. The sentence Equivalency This mediocre as well. I do applaud you for at least using the vocabulary to make some stretches.

Quant:
Here is where your editor truly shines! This part of the book is riddled with so many inaccuracies. From question which should have a square next to them instead of circles ( One of these things is not like the other!)The math is just wrong on a variety of problems from inequalities not matching to your editor even forgetting some of the basic rules of PEMDAS. That is not even a scratch on the surface of what makes this section the worst (even over Kaplans error ridden Advanced math practice) review book.

But WAIT THERE'S MORE FOLKS. For the past three Editions THERE IS NO ERRATA. I mean you think a company with the gal to release such error-ridden book would AT the LEAST offer to edit the book down the road. NOPE.

If I could put into words the ire you've raised through this book it would pant a vivacious picture of frustration.
