This resource falls 2 cents short of a promotional piece! Very little substance with LOTS of advertisement, not to mention the price! If you want to pay for advertising this is the perfect book for you! Very disappointing! Steer clear of buying this one! I need a refund!!!

great format

i love how barron's presents their vocab thematically. i also love that this book comes with an audio mp3 disc and includes sentences that enable you to learn the words in useful contexts.

because i don't think enough info is provided regarding the mp3s, i'll tell you about them. the mp3s simply state the spanish words/phrases/example sentences in the order that they appear in the book. the english counterparts aren't stated. so basically the mp3s are useful as a pronunciation guide, to improve listening comprehension, and for review.

Red ink is a problem, otherwise great

I purchased this as an aid for a Spanish conversation class I'm taking and am very pleased with its general layout, grouping terms by category. I was also pleased to see it has an index, so that if you are not sure what name they would give the topic you want, but know one term that belongs in it, you can look up the term and find the page(s) with more on-topic vocabulary.

The vocabulary CD that came with the book nicely provides native pronunciation of the vocabulary, grouped by topic as in the book. (I haven't checked to see how complete it is, but it seems to track the book with both terms and examples.) Note that the CD does not provide English translation, however, and so cannot be used for self-testing of active recollection of terminology, but it will adequately reinforce the passive recognition of it. (A big plus is that it does not have the ubiquitous beep, which is so annoying in the CD accompanying Barron's 501 Spanish Verbs!)

That being said, I sincerely hope the publishers will reconsider their choice of RED INK for the Spanish text. Generally I want any unfamiliar terms--in this case, the Spanish--to jump out to my eye. Knowing English, it is easier for me to recognize fuzzy English printing than it is to interpret faded print in Spanish.
What Barron's has done, however, is to use clear black type for the English side of the vocabulary lists and a brownish red for the Spanish. Even in boldface, the red ink is very hard to read at a glance, but reading at a glance is what you want for finding suitable vocabulary quickly. In fact looking at it here at my desk beside the computer, more light seems to reflect off the side of the page with red ink than off the side with black, even though it is obviously the same paper. I feel I need to squint looking at the red print, but have no such reaction to the black.
And heaven help anyone trying to read this in low light, where I expect the red will disappear entirely.
A dark blue would have been a much better choice, I think.

I am rather disappointed with this book

I am rather disappointed with this book. The layout is fine but the major problem I have is that the sentence structures are generally not accurate and the word choices are not accurate, especially for Latin American Spanish. The book tries to distinguish when a word is Latin American or Spanish in its usage, but it doesn't seem very accurate. Several of my Spanish speaking friends have looked at the book and said that they would not say or write things the way they are in the book.

Hitler's Greatest Oversight

Among other things, this book provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind of Adolph Hitler and his attitude towards the United States prior to 1941, and American entry into the war. The author exhaustively documents through memos, dispatches, various public statements - even in Hitler's own last written work (Testament) - that Hitler was derisively contemptuous of the United States, its leaders, its people, its history, its military capabilities. Even when a close associate Ernst "Putzi" Hanfstaengl solicited Hitler's agreement in 1922 that U.S. entry into WWI was singularly responsible for Germany's ultimate defeat, he noted - as did many others - that Hitler refused to seriously consider that America could ever present a meaningful obstacle in the future to Germany's path of conquest and domination, a cultural prejudice that would prove to be Hitler's undoing. The Swastika and The Eagle gives a thoroughly unique alternative perspective on one probable cause for American involvement in WWII, beyond the traditional explanation of the attack on Pearl Harbor as being the trigger.

great leap into docker

I'm three chapters short of finishing “Docker in Action.” Usually, I finish a book before reviewing it but I wanted to get my review in before the coderanch.com book promotion for this title.

Anyway, good book. It covers the concepts well in addition to providing examples you can easily follow along with and best practices. There was even a scavenger hunt activity to get you familiar with search. I also liked the disclaimers about chaning tech and how to excuse the poor passwordss “suppose the DBA is a cat lover and hates strong passwords”

My favorite chapter was chapter 9 (which is online for free at Manning's site). In addition to explaining different models, it had a comparison table on how each hosting mechanism scores on various attributes with notes on each. It also had a great diagram for each. My second favorite chapter was chapter 8 which covers each of the instructions for a docker file.

So what prevented me from giving a perfect score? Little things. There's a reference to Appendix B, but no Appendix. I'd have liked a comparison of all the models (without notes) in Chapter 9. There were some forward references that confused me. Nothing terrible, but I can't give a perfect star rating. I still recommend you buy the book. It's great for getting started with Docker or learning about best practices.

Learned absolutely nothing on how to build a business

I was hoping to learn how to build a business as it says on the cover but it tells me nothing specific, just general stuff you can find on the web.
The book is simply their success story told, which I must say, I do admire but the title should have been "our success story", NOT "build a business from your kitchen table" as I haven't got a clue how to start building my business after reading it.
It is all extremely vague and doesn't tell you exactly what to do.

Must-have resource for Lightswitch development

This is the indispensable resource for developing HTML5 lightswitch apps. In clear language and with well-crafted examples the author walks you through the creation of a non-trivial lightswitch application.

That's worth the price alone but it's only the start of this book. You are then escorted through Lightswitch's internal workings and shown how to take things to the next level-- asynchronous data calls, jQuery customizations, Sharepoint integration, themes and advanced screen navigation to name a few features.

Much of this information comes from the author's relationship with the Lightswitch team at Microsoft and is unavailable anywhere else.

If you want to second-source then Jan Van Der Hagen's Lightswitch books (available for free) at Syncfusion are excellent add-ons to this one.

I enjoy using this book as a reference. This edition has improved the organization of the chapters so everything is easy to find. It combines the chapters on pure LightSwitch applications and SharePoint applications really well. You start with the LightSwitch application and in the following chapter, modify it to run on SharePoint.

Conformal prediction is a valuable new method of machine learning. Conformal predictors are among the most accurate methods of machine learning, and unlike other state-of-the-art methods, they provide information about their own accuracy and reliability.

This new monograph integrates mathematical theory and revealing experimental work. It demonstrates mathematically the validity of the reliability claimed by conformal predictors when they are applied to independent and identically distributed data, and it confirms experimentally that the accuracy is sufficient for many practical problems. Later chapters generalize these results to models called repetitive structures, which originate in the algorithmic theory of randomness and statistical physics. The approach is flexible enough to incorporate most existing methods of machine learning, including newer methods such as boosting and support vector machines and older methods such as nearest neighbors and the bootstrap.

I felt confident that Labriola was experienced and knowledgeable as a counselor

The Jealousy Workbook is a textbook style book, with few typos and a slick interior design with easy-to-read type. It has many pages that could be photocopied by counselors for use by clients during sessions. All exercises can be done by couples or only one member of a couple if necessary. This book is mostly designed for those who have already decided on a poly relationship model and just need a little (or a lot of) help implementing the process. This book was organized amazingly well, but I do believe that terms should have been defined as soon as they appeared, especially when initially Labriola uses words like "jealousy" and "envy" interchangeably.

I felt confident that Labriola was experienced and knowledgeable as a counselor and with her genuinely poly personal life. Many of the exercises could be incredibly useful, especially Chapter 11's section on modifying core beliefs. I do wish that Labriola and her publisher had made a "token monogamist" review the book before printing. The point of view of the author led to a few alienating and ridiculous statements like, "Most people find that the gains in the 'pros' column outweigh the losses in the 'cons' side, convincing them that having an open relationship will make them happier than continuing in a monogamous relationship (p15)." I could let this slide since the book seems to be aimed towards those already in open relationships, but the above statement was in a chapter on grieving the loss of a monogamous relationship, so it seems rather insensitive.

Also, chapter 1 is all about determining whether a poly relationship is right for you, which was evaluated through a number of quizzes. Unfortunately, those quizzes were rigged with questions that always result in a positive answer at least SOMETIMES by somebody with a healthy relationship. Example: "Did you want more romance and excitement in your relationship?" "Did you sometimes feel that there was some important component missing from the relationship?" "Do you enjoy the security and stability of a monogamous relationship but also long for more romance and passion?" "Have you generally succeeded in keeping agreements you have made with your partner?" "Have you generally made good choices in picking emotionally healthy partners?" Generally, this chapter comes off as manipulative and disingenuous, so I think it could do with deletion in future editions to narrow the scope to people who have already decided on the lifestyle.

One more criticism I have may be a personal ideological difference in opinion. She seems to be a great proponent of Freud, not just in Chapter 5's giant Freud love-in. I found the constant insistence to reach back into childhood for experiences to blame to be troubling. People reading this book do not need help alienating themselves from the only support system and relationship they might feel is stable during this time: their family.

Overall, however, this book was filled with many other terrific exercises and thoughts. The final chapter included many other points of view from prominent authors, which allowed a differentiated experience for those who may have struggled with previous exercises. I will heartily recommend this book to clients of mine who are struggling with jealousy in their open relationships if they are already secure in their decision to become poly. I would also encourage counselors and other advisors to read this book if they are interested in promoting a poly-friendly practice.

The nuts and bolts of working through jealousy

As a therapist that works with many polyamorous clients, I greatly appreciate Kathy Labriola's work. She has extensive knowledge of polyamory and devotes great attention to her own clients within the therapeutic field. The workbook does exactly what it says. In clear, easy to follow steps it takes you through understanding your feelings on monogamy and polyamory, working to understand the roots of jealousy, and what triggers it now. Labriola breaks down in understandable terms and exercises on how to handle the emotions when jealousy is present and feels overwhelming. She provides a wide array of examples, suggestions, and very help advice for managing common issues within polyamory. Finally, she provides a look into how to communicate within open relationships and even provides insight into the reality of what happens when someone makes a mistake within these relationship formations. Labriola's approach to the real and important elements of an open relationship are wonderfully helpful to anyone that is considering polyamory for the first time or even those that continue to struggle with multiple emotions within an open relationship. I highly recommend this book and plan to recommend it to my clients as well.

A Hands-on book to Navigating Jealousy & Open Relationships!

I am a licensed mental health counselor who has worked with couple's subscribing to open relationships. When I was approached to review Kathy Labriola's new workbook on navigating jealousy in open relationships, I was quite honored. Ms. Labriola has listened to the real life needs and questions of the couples she works with in her private practice and has established hands-on exercises and assessments to assist these couples in exploring ways to address whether they should/shouldn't pursue opening up their relationships. Likewise, she has normalized and described the experience of jealousy and provided ways to effectively manage and work through these feelings (which is actually a set of several emotions and can change depending on the person and the situation). One way or the other, Ms. Labriola seems to offer that it is important for each partner in a couple (or any of the multiple types of relationship configurations) to become aware of his/her general beliefs [about relationships], triggers, emotional responses, and communication styles. When one is aware, one can develop more effective skills in working through relationship dynamics and various emotions. Her jealousy workbook is an easy-to-use toolkit for, either those just exploring the concept of opening up, or those who have been in an open relationship for several years. Additionally, her book offers some refreshing ideas and exercises that might even be a benefit to monogamous couples. I recommend her book to anyone in a non-monogamous or monogamous relationship style. Additionally, I encourage anyone who wants to work through jealousy to get this book - whether related to romantic relationships or other types of contexts.
