New Edition is Better

There is a new edition (the fifth) for this book, and it is better than the edition shown here. While avoiding a polemical view, Baron illustrates business ethical priciples with very poignant examples and stories. The case studies are very up to date and fun to read. More than that, though, the case studies can form a basis for classroom debate and discussion which not only brings the material to life but also promotes critical thinking and articulation among students.

I liked it very much, and recommend it highly.

I've read a good chunk of this book during a B-school elective on non-market strategies, and found it imparted some valuable information. It's not very prescriptive if that's what you're looking for. But it made me feel like I got something out of the class despite an unstellar professor.

Hire a new Editor

I needed this book for an Executive MBA course. First off, this book is full of spelling errors. Tesla Motors is cited as "Telsa" multiple times, and MPG (miles per gallon) is cited as "mph." Sergey Brin of Google is named "Serge." Punctuation is also missing between sentences. No excuses for being a book about BUSINESS.

The read is dry and the layout is bulky. Only more reason to create an 8th Edition. Buyer beware.

Henk Tijms is Professor in Operations Research at the Vrije University in Amsterdam. A great introductory probability book

Henk Tijms is one of the world's leading experts in applied probability. This book is a wonderful introduction to probability theory. The second half of book a requires basic differntial calculus but beyond that only high school algebra is required. First half of book motivates probabilistic thinking through many fascinating examples and problems. Second half of book fills in the rigor. What sets the book apart is that unlike most books every problem and example are interesting. Another excellent feature is the fact that simulation is used throughout to develop probabilistic inttiution. All in all a wonderful book.

I write textbooks in the field but several examples in the book (such as Poisson approximation to the famous birthday problem) taught me some new tricks!

Great intro to probability

I am a physician who uses probabilty and statistics in research and I am always interested in finding textbooks that are such effective teaching instruments that they are suitable for self-study. Unfortunately work has prevented me from finishing this book for now and so my comments are based on an incomplete reading of the book but my initial impression was positive and I thought it was worth sharing. But it is one of the best books I have found. It is a nice balance between mathematical rigor and expository writing and I very much appreciated historical anecdotes that come in handy when one wonders if one has what it takes to finish the book and master the subject-specifically how Leibniz had difficulty calculating the probability of rolling a certain number with dice. I was particularky impressed because I had a very negative impression of some of the "classics" that will remain unnamed that are undoubtedly super colelctions of information and concepts but rather poor vehicals of instruction. I have to admit that I definitely prefer a more expository style in which the author is really speaking to you. The "high-density" books are not for me. So I very much appreciated professor Tijms expository approach.

Added this one to my shelf! While I have basic soil textbooks such as the classic by Brady and Weil (The Nature & Properties of Soils), this book covers the basics very clearly and has excellent visuals! Further, it deals with the specifics of growing plants/trees especially in urban soils. The review questions at the end of each chapter not only help to focus attention on the main points, but are also an excellent guide for any professional-in-training who will be taking a certifiication exam such as the Certified Arborist Exam or Certified Horticulturist. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning about the basics of growing plants in productive garden soils and in learning how to care for the soil-web-of-life!

About the Author

Shun Lien Chuang, PhD, is the MacClinchie Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. His research centers on semiconductor optoelectronic and nanophotonic devices. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, IEEE, and the Optical Society of America. He received the Engineering Excellence Award from the OSA, the Distinguished Lecturer Award and the William Streifer Scientific Achievement Award from the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society, and the Humboldt Research Award for Senior U.S. Scientists from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

Very detailed, Nice section on calculating strain effects...

I have mainly used this book to help me understand how to incorporate the effects of tensile and compressive strain in quantum well calculations. It does this very clearly. It covers many other topics, but the main points are: 1) This is a graduate-level text probably unsuitable as a first exposure to this area for undergraduates; and 2) the author is not afraid of diving into the technical nitty-gritty of the areas he covers. He does a great job of explaining concepts in a relatively short amount of text (i.e. it is terse, yet understandable for the most part) and he provides good detail, including much data on III-V material properties. As another example, it gives a complete but condensed discussion of the Marcatili and effective index approximations for calculating single mode cutoffs in rectangular dielectric waveguides for lasers or PICs. This is a great reference book for those who actually want to calculate or design something without using a canned program.

Excellent book for basic physics of optoelectronics

The book starts with the very basic equations of electromagnetic and semiconductor theory and builds up to more advanced topics such as band structure calculations for semiconductors including strained quantum wells, various optical transitions processes, optical absorption spectra, etc. In addition, the book covers the basic theory of laser cavity resonance and this includes the distributed feedback laser theory. Various waveguide, electro-optical modulators and photodetector principles are also treated in clear detail. The book brings you up to the level of which the research papers in the optoelectronic area has been written.

good book, but...

First of all, I want to express regret that there is no excellent book covering the area of theory, fabrication, characterization of semiconductor lasers/devices. Some are too easy and some are too difficult. The symbols and convention are not unified at all, even simple "rate equations" have a lot of versions.

Overall, this book is good for graduate students. A good companion for advanced study. However, I don't like too many equations with only few explanations. By the way, on the small signal analysis of laser modulation, I recommend Coldren's "Diode lasers and photonic integrated circuits". Rate equations there make more sense to me. If you find it hard to understand, maybe try Parker's "Physics of Optoelectronics", an 5-star book. The strength of this book is its completeness, especially on optics, quantum mechanics and electromagnetics.

Truly a heart calling...

I am a muslim (moslem) and I have been seeking spiritual knowledge that can answer my questions with objective answers. I read Sufism, Hinduism (among others; Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads), and Buddhism. I read science books - Physics, Cosmology, and many sources of knowledge. All are good and open my eyes and my heart to the existence of divine beings. Us, as human are divine being. All of nature are divine. I came to this conclusion and yet still amazed and awed by this special book.

This book makes me cry and smile. I exhale the warmth of love from the divine inside me, and inhale the limitless love from the same divine in every corner of the world. Because we are One with God. The wisdom that shines the world with divine light.

Imam Jamal Rahman teaches us how to identify and locate our negative ego and how to embrace it with love.
Teaches us sincerity, humility and truthfulness.

I recommend this book to all people. Not just Muslim, but to all who are seeking enlightenment and want to embark into spiritual journey.

A wonderful, insightful book. A must read if you are trying to get to the heart of the spirituality in Islam. The author writes poetically about the beautiful parts of the Quran, and Rumi's teachings and it is hard to put down. Definitely recommending this to all of my friends. A Gem of a Book!

Jamal's latest book is filled with deep insights and practical spirituality. It includes a wonderful array of Rumi poetry, Mullah stories, and personal stories from the author's life, all of which illuminate the deeply universal message from the Qur'an and the life of Prophet Muhammad. My favorite metaphor applies to the book itself: "The Qur'an is like a shy bride. If you want to get to know her, approach her through her friends." Jamal is definitely an intimate friend of the Qur'an, and when he introduces you to her in this book, you will behold her in all her exquisite beauty. But the Qur'an is not treated as simply a holy book, or a collection of teachings. It is presented as a way of life, a path of inquiry and understanding which leads us deep into our own heart, and into the hearts of our fellow beings. This book is perhaps best studied in a loving community of seekers after truth, so its treasures may be unveiled slowly and carefully. It is a book not simply to be read, but to be savored and practiced.

It was okay. The story is pretty much told to us, like the author was narrating much of the story. It is about BBW going to meet her intended mail order groom. She is being bullied by two passangers. Hero defends heroine. The climax scene was bizarre, for minute was confused if this was a shifter book, maybe. Anyway, you get HEA. There is one sensual scene at the end. Like bullies to get what is coming to them and it is a sweet love story, so I gave the book a three. Just would not read again. Didn't like style it was written. Safe read. No OW or OM.
