In this labor of love, Donovan collects the multiple threads that led to the 1876 massacre at Little Big Horn. By the 1870s various American Indian tribes ignored the American government's edict to relocate to reservations. Growth in pioneer settlements had produced so many clashes that western commander Philip Sheridan ordered three army columns to converge on an immense Indian encampment in southern Montana Territory. Donovan's eye-opening description of these cavalrymen contradicts the Hollywood image. These troops were untrained, inexperienced in individual combat and poorly equipped. Custer, the first to encounter the enemy encampment, split his forces before attacking. This tactical error ensured that some units would survive the fighting, here described in vivid detail. Custer's last stand became the Indians', too. Though the army was happy to blame the debacle on the dead Custer, the battle's survivors banded together to ensure no reputation went tarnished in public hearings. The author makes a good case for Custer as scapegoat by portraying him as a likable Civil War hero, flamboyant publicity hound and more experienced Indian fighter than most of his men and all of his commanders,. Exhaustive research, lively prose and fresh interpretation make for a valuable addition to literature on this otherwise well-trodden historical event. (Mar. 24)

Best All Around Single Volume on the Battle. A good start for new students, and a tension filled account for serious students.

Personally as a deep student of the battle I think this is the single best and most comprehensive account for those wishing such a book, especially new students. I found nothing particularly inaccurate in the account and the author moves to different places and time frames deftly and creates a compelling tension filled account. I found the book totally non-partisan. No one comes out looking good on the government side which is as it should be. Benteen dawdled but was brave, Reno drank, was difficult and less than a military hero, Custer was arrogant and allowed his dispersed battalions to be defeated in detail. All true. Ultimately he is responsible for the deployment of his troops and knowing what his subalterns could or could not be expected to do, and this book does not hide that fact. No one imagined the Native tribes would be so well armed, so numerous and so determined. All of this and more is made very clear in this well written book. I have read it 40 times at least and could read it again. Son of the Morning Star (recommended by some here) is quite evocative and beautifully written, but not nearly the taught description of the events start to finish set out by Donovan. Start with this one first. For advanced students who just want to relive the events, I am such a person and love this book deeply.

An excellent in-depth treatise on a legendary battle

I have often heard discussions about the Battle of the Little Bighorn and have read some studies on this historic battle; however, I have never read any historic work that goes into as much depth and detail. At the end of the day, it is a classic study in hubris and human failings.

The book starts out a little slowly but progresses more rapidly as the movement into the battle arrives. I learned a great deal about the native American leaders, Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse and many others--strong leaders trying to protect their way of life. And I gained greater insight into the officers and men following Custer into battle.

I would recommend this book as a definite must read if you are interested in the American West. This book has made me add a visit to the battle site to my bucket list.

Readable Like a Good Story Book

I read this book as I camped along the same path Custer and his men took from Fort Lincoln to the Little Big Horn. I recommend this book over DVDs and other books on the battle of the Little Big Horn for getting an unbiased and well researched picture of the battle. Educational and entertaining at the same time.

Judith McWilliams always creates characters you like

Withou fail, Judith McWilliams produces central characters you would be willing to invite over for coffee. she's done it again with Jessie and Max. Billionaire Max hires Jessie to teach him social skills to help him win a socially acceptable wife. With just a hint of pygmalion in reverse Max comes to see that its the person that matters, not the polish. If you like fun, articulate, mature, professional characters dancing the dance of love, this is a read you'll enjoy.

About the Author
Cari Meister has written more than a hundred books for children, including the "Tiny" series (Penguin) and the "Meet the Monsters" series (Stone Arch Books). She has received many awards for her books. Most recently, "Airplane Adventure" (Stone Arch Books), was named to "Parents" magazine Best Books for 2010. Cari has been fascinated by the night sky ever since she can remember. Her love of space and stars led her to Space Camp when she was growing up. Today, Cari lives in the mountains of Colorado, with her husband, four boys, two horses and one dog.

Carolina was born in Bah�a Blanca, Argentina. She graduated in 1993 becoming both a Professor and Bachelor of Arts specialized in drawing.� In 2005 she won the charge of Adjunt Teacher of the department of Drawing in the career of Visual Communication Design at the faculty of Bellas Artes.� In 2007 she was selected by the National Cultural Secretariat of Argentina as the illustrator for the XVI Feria del Libro of Habana, Cuba.� Carolina is currently working both as an illustrator and teacher.

I was born on the 7th of november 1986 in Cuneo, a city near Turin, Italy . As a young child, I was always drawing and painting and after my graduation I finally decided to make my great passion into a career! This was one of the best choice in my life. I attended a three years post diploma degree, with a master of Illustration at the IED of Turin, Italy, where I graduated in July 2008. During this experience I built up my artist’s skills, with a regardful eye to the juvenile illustration market. In 2010 I became part of the freelance Illustrators represented by the MB Artists of New York,� having the great possibility to work with several important publishers. This job is amazing and I just want to keep growing up in the great word of illustration, my job and my passion at the same time.

Eva Montanari was born in Rimini, Italy, in 1977. She started out as a children’s books author and illustrator while she was still a student, graduating from the State Institute of Art and the European Institute of Design in Milan. Now she is an internationally recognized artist that wrote and illustrated children books that have been published in Italy, United States, Japan, Taiwan, France, Spain, UK and Germany.

Polona Kosec was born in Ljubljana on a warm rainy day. Since the year 2006 she works as a freelance artist/illustrator. In 2009 she completed post-graduate qualification (a Master of Arts degree programme) at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana. She likes working with other people and has collaborated with a number of publishing houses and authors through the years. She does illustrations and character design for children's books and children's magazines as well as short commercial animation.

The book contains four excellent variations on the story. They are good for adults and literature students doing a comparison. The illustrations will appeal to both children and adults. There is a covert lesson in each story. Look for it and think.

This is a great children's book. It contains different versions of the cinderella story. I love the diversity that is in here. There are different cultures that are addressed. I will definitely be reading this to my niece soon!

Awesome. Complete book with everything you need.

I've read.... many books on sports nutrition and fitness. Alot. An embarrassing amount, really. Enough on that.

This is the one I recommend. Everything you need. No silly fads or dangerous ideas or stupid stuff. You don't have to read 50 books. Just this one.

Its not intimidating either. The author never oversteps her expertise, doesn't claim to know things that no one knows... instead she briefly explains the research, for and against, and leaves it up to you to decide. What could be more honest?

It is British... some of the food doesn't exist here, and others have different names. Rocket is arugula. I've had no luck ever finding nonfat or lowfat fresh farmers cheese in the states... too bad really.
