Emma (Collins Classics), by Jane Austen

HarperCollins is proud to present its range of best-loved, essential classics.

‘The real evils, indeed, of Emma’s situation were the power of having rather too much her own way, and a disposition to think a little too well of herself…’

Beautiful, rich, self-assured and witty, Emma Woodhouse delights in matchmaking those around her, with no apparent care for her own romantic life. Taking young Harriet Smith under her wing, Emma sets her sights on finding a suitable match for her friend. Chided for her mistakes by old friend Mr Knightley, it is only when Harriet starts to pursue her own love interests that Emma realises the true hidden depths of her own heart.

Delightful, engaging and entertaining, and with a dazzling gallery of characters, Emma is arguably Austen’s most well-loved social comedy.

Amazon.com Review
Perhaps the out-and-out funniest of Jane Austen's books. Telling the story of a heroine Austen feared readers would actively dislike, Emma has turned out to be a character whose creation was necessary to the development of the spoiled rich kid genre of literature, TV and movies. Since Emma knows what's best for everybody, she sets about trying to straighten the world out. It doesn't work. Fortunately, before completely screwing up everyone else's life, she gets her head screwed on straight and for the first time sees what it's all about.

From Library Journal
This is another case where a classic is being reprinted simply as a tie-in to a TV/feature film presentation. Libraries, nonetheless, can benefit by picking up a quality hardcover for a nice price.

It's One Heavy Book
By KJC
So I just wanted to let others know that this collection is one giant book of all Austen novels combined. You can't tell from the picture, but I was actually expecting (and hoping for) individual books packed in one box like other book collections I have. So I was definitely a bit disappointed when I received this book. And while I am used to reading large books like David McCullough biographies, this compilation is by far the heaviest I have in my possession. I'm not sure I will be able to read this in bed or even hold it up in my arms for any long period of time. So beware. I would have chosen differently if had this information when I was contemplating purchase.

One of My Favorite Austen Novels
By Miranda Atchley
Fanny Price is the quintessential “poor cousin.” Her family consists of many siblings, and when her mother and father find themselves unable to care for all of them, they send Fanny to live with her aunt and uncle, Sir Thomas and Mrs. Norris at Mansfield Park. Living in the grand home is an adjustment for Fanny and her cousins and aunt are not very fond of her, though she adapts to life at Mansfield Park. Over the years, Fanny and Edmund become very close, yet her aunt has other plans for both of them.

Mansfield Park is among my favorite Austen novels. I just found myself enjoying the book. I liked Fanny; she was one of Jane Austen’s more realistic characters and I felt pretty sorry for her most of the time. Edmund was all right; I feel like I didn’t really get to know him, like he wasn’t as big a part of the story as some of Jane Austen’s other heroes. But he seemed pretty nice and I like that he stood up for Fanny. There were of course a ton of villains trying to thwart love’s plans. Mrs. Norris was a very annoying character and fit her role of the evil relation perfectly. But alas, there was the happy ending and all was well at Mansfield Park (for the most part, anyway).

I give this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Fanny is a puzzle
By Kindle Customer
This was probably as interesting a read as Emma or P&P, as far as scandals and such. I have to say though, that Fanny confused me. Was she truly shy and timid? Then why did she dig her heels in on Henry Crawford? Seems to me that she would have allowed her own desires to be overruled by her uncle or cousin. I didn't see her having enough mettle to hold her ground.

Part of what I didn't like was Edmund, TBH. Austen usually includes pretty dense male characters (Jim Thorpe, Mr. Darcy, Mr. Elton) who can't seem to understand that politeness on a woman's part doesn't equal romantic interest. But Edmund was frequently told to his face by Mary Crawford that she doesn't like what he does for a living, and that she hopes his brother will die so he can inherit. Why wasn't that clear to him? I kept shutting the book and walking away in frustration because she'd tell him something, and he'd justify it or say she was joking. Talk about only hearing what you want to hear! He is honestly the dumbest of the Austen heroes, and the least likable one.
