Down the mountain, one orc who asks too many questions tumbles, fleeing his past, with only an elven horse, a pair of boots, and an old book for company. Below the whole world awaits him, filled with humans, elves, trolls, and a thousand other monsters that make a habit of killing little orcs like Talking-Wind.
Worse than any of them is the Lady of Firebrand Peak, the dragon who told Talking-Wind to stay put and wait to be eaten like a good orc. Orcs hate questions, but the one thing they hate more than orcs that ask too many questions is an orc looking for all the answers. The pursuit of dangerous knowledge only ever leads to trouble for the tribe. The Lady is not kind, nor is she forgiving.
If Talking-Wind wishes to have any kind of chance to survive he will have to understand why dragons are what they are, and what makes dragons do what dragons do. If he can stay one step ahead of the Lady of Firebrand Peak maybe, just maybe, he might even find a way to fight back.
Talking-Wind will need answers.
And a lot of them.

Essentially perfect.
By David Adams
The Orc of Many Questions, the first in this series by author Shane Michael Murray, was a unique and interesting take on fantasy that genuinely surprised me and left me eagerly awaiting more.
Accordingly I had high expectations for The Orc of Many Answers. These expectations were met. They were high, so I viewed this book with a much more critical eye than the first, but I was not disappointed.
The characters -- characters I cared about -- had a sterling adventure. Some new ones were introduced, some old ones returned, and some won't be back for the sequels although their ghosts will probably linger on, as those of the unfortunates from the first book seem to do.
My only criticism is that OMA is almost twice the length of its predecessor, so there's a lot more going on here than one might originally suspect; this changes the pacing of the book, taking it from the condensed format where every chapter is almost a tiny story in and of itself to a sprawling, much more epic novel with battles, open warfare, and a host of interesting villains, heroes, and many more in-between.
It's a bold move. I appreciated the extra length, and devoured it greedily, but I feel that sticking to the original format worked better; OMA would have worked just as well as two novels, and there's almost a clear diving point where this transition could have happened, but it was not to be. Perhaps for the best; change is good. Too many novels become predictable, with the beats and twists derived from formula. Orcs 1 was never this and the tradition continues.
If additional length is the only complaint I can find in this book of richly crafted characters, beautiful descriptive scenes, powerful emotive punches and subtle wisdom, then it is a tiny one indeed.
The Tales of Many Orcs is a series of small lessons, where everything small affects the world in a big way, and everything important matters to the unimportant. I would be unsurprised if, in the future, this series becomes one of the classical examples of its genre.
Highly recommended.

Murray Masters Fundamentals
By Brandon Carbaugh
As stunning a sequel as ever you could ask. In the fantasy sub-genre of "stories about guys who can talk to the wind but spend most of their time getting beaten up and mugged," Murray stands proudly alongside Rothfuss: his prose perhaps not quite as rich or elegant, but his pacing a damn sight better.
Here's what you want from a good fantasy novel: a rich, interesting world full of familiar touchstones without being derivative, which is just caked in history and lore without feeling the need to cram every inch of it down your throat. You want a world that feels like it extends beyond the margins; like you're just witnessing one little slice of it, and maybe not even the coolest or most interesting slice.
Most importantly, you want a writer who understands story-structure, because fantasy is a genre that is inherently rooted in the stuff. And when a fantasy writer doesn't grok that (or elects to ignore it) you can feel it: slogging passages of mundane action which is no less tedious for its fantastical setting (I'm looking at you, Harry Potter's Camping Adventure!)
This book is THAT.
Put simply: The Orc of Many Answers is made of the stuff that builds classics, and it fires on all cylinders from start to finish, and not a hair feels out of place, and not an element feels wrong. Everything WORKS. The machine fires right up when you start it, hums exactly on-key, does precisely what it's designed to, and it's totally gripping from start to finish. This is vivid high fantasy stripped down to bare essentials, and focused in on one small corner of that divine fae pantheon his majesty Tolkien defined for us:
Orcs.
Orcs, in all their nasty gravitas, all their sweat and blood and bile, their rage and grotesquery, their badass-ness, their pillage and plunder, their essential quality of F--K YEAH. Murray presents a game-like world that balances precipitously on a centuries-old equilibrium of interspecial relations--dwarves dig, elves frolic, orcs raid, and humans suck--and then he upends the table and spits in your eye with a wink and a click of his heels.
In the first novel, The Orc of Many Questions, this story was told like Dreamworks on meth: a rebellious youth disobeys his parents and violates the social strictures of his tribe, for (he thinks) the betterment of all.
In the sequel, Murray gives us a rock'n'roll yarn, a taut fugitive story, The Bourne Fellowship, and chisels out a picture wherein the main character's actions serve as the pebble that starts the landslide, sending the balance of the entire world spiraling out of whack.
This is damn good stuff, is what I'm saying. Or, to put it another way: this book is so good that the first version of this review was rejected for enthusiastic profanity.

Entertaining read
By J.Rolf Tournier
The Orc of many answers was a great read. Moving on from exactly where the Orc of many questions finished. From the first page the pace does not let up and we are lead swiftly from the mountain that is home to the Orc tribes and through the elven forest into a major city of men.
Our Hero, Talking wind/Azekin fumbles his way through the story, first by making a lucky escape from his tribe who is hunting him at the command of the lady of the mountain. He is transformed into a human but only in body. With the aid of an Elf maiden as he leaves the forest he makes a further escape from the lady after she sets a large swathe of the forest alight. It is the early scenes that really set the feel for the rest of the book. Talking wind feels scarred and we feel it with him.
It is not until Talking wind is in the city of Tooyk that his real trials begin as he struggles to find his way as an Orc trapped in human form. Initially he finds himself adjusting to his new life but after awhile his need knowledge and his curiosity find him in situations that he cannot easily handle. This at times leads to his friends being caused pain of which he never intended them to have but over which he has no control.
The conflicts in this story are very much Moral ones. Talking wind himself is not violent by nature and it is through his desire to know the way of things that he finds himself in trouble or having the occasional a-ha moment. As always he tries to use his brain to solve his problems, its just his mouth keeps finding him new problems.
The story itself is brought together at the end with talking wind finally realising he has to be himself and follow the destiny that is his. We are left with the feeling that his true potential is still to be reached.
Talking wind is not blessed with skill at arms or skill with magic but he is determined and is very much a problem solver. Because of this Talking wind struggles with the relationships he builds with the other characters, causing most of the trials he must overcome. Talking wind cares for his new friends but also seems to struggle with views that are not like those of an Orc.
For me the most rewarding experience of this story was the way that Mr Murray has captured the magical and other worldly feel of the creatures and settings in his story. I enjoyed being taken back to times when I enjoyed such creatures and magic reading fantasy when I was younger. The magic in the scenes where talking wind is saved by the Elf witch and later when he is used like a puppet by a fairy are simply fantastic and many other scenes like these really draw you into the story.
The Orc of many Questions was well written and it manged to deliver a character whose world I felt connected with. I could feel the pain and the joy that Talking wind felt and as he developed through the story I felt I was right there with him learning as he did.
If you loved the Hobbit then ‘The Orc of many Answer’s one book you will enjoy.
