Andrew Feinstein, former member of the African National Congress, investigates the secretive world of the global arms trade in his gripping new book The Shadow World. Feinstein reveals the corruption and the cover-ups behind BAE's controversial transactions in South Africa, Tanzania and eastern Europe and the revolving-door relationships that characterise the US Congressional-Military-Industrial Complex. The Shadow World exposes both the formal government-backed trade in arms as well as the illicit deals and lays bare the shocking links between the two. 'Essential reading for anyone who cares about justice, transparency and accountability in both the public and private spheres, and for anyone who believes that it is more important to invest in saving lives than in the machinery of death' Archbishop Desmond Tutu 'Andrew Feinstein has written an authoritative guide to the business of war. Chilling, heartbreaking and enraging' Arundhati Roy 'The nobility and justice of Feinstein's sentiments are indisputable. The arms trade is a loathsome commerce conducted by people who wear suits and occupy big boardroom tables, but should have trouble sleeping at night' Max Hastings, Sunday Times 'Remarkable and courageous . . . The Shadow World is a heroic book by an author who, in writing it, has put himself in the firing line' Iain Macwhirter 'Feinstein's book is a singularly powerful study, and deserves to be read by anyone who wants to see light shining on such a shadowy world' Independent Andrew Feinstein is the author of After the Party: A Personal and Political Journey Inside the ANC, a best-selling memoir of his time as an African National Congress MP in South Africa. His journalism has been featured in the Guardian, Daily Telegraph, Prospect, New York Times, Spiegel, New Statesman and Africa Report. He appears regularly on the BBC, CNN and Al Jazeera. He is the founding co-director of Corruption Watch, an anti-corruption NGO, and chairperson of the Aids charity FoTAC.

Astonishing account of moral decay
By Gonzo
Just got done with the book and I simply can't comprehend the extent of corruption related to this trade. It is amazing that despite the trove of evidence cited in the book and how brazen and complete the violations are, nothing meaningful has been done to-date to stop these crimes. It's mind boggling to read about the radar equipment sold to Tanzanian air force that has 8 planes at cost equivalent to the amount spent on health or how South Africa is paying for planes it didn't want or need in the first place. After Daniel Yergin's book on Oil, this is one of the most comprehensively researched book that I've read. Amazing job by the Author who am sure is risking a lot by exposing these corrupt regimes and corporations around the world. Great job and I'd highly recommend it to anyone interested in reading about this truly shadowy world of Global Arms Trade. Simply amazing book and yet another example of the power of corruption.

Lots of trees, couldn't see the forest.
By Akira R1100
It's a fairly good collection of various arms trades that have taken place in the western-allied world for the last so many decades. A grab-bag of samples is not what I wanted to read though.
It's like being interested in the topic of crime in society in general, but then only having a book about the great gangsters of the 20th Century. Focus on those trees and of course you can no longer see the forest.
Shadow World will not help me read further between the lines of current and future international news events. Apart from the certainty that future arms trades in the western world will adapt to avoid resemblance with the historical cases in this book, I'm also at loss with the Chinese and Russian spheres as they were not even covered.

The dastardly deals of the arms manufecturesat the expense of society .
By Michael koenigstein
Well written. Extremely interesting. The connection between governments, arms manufactures, and various middle men is brought to light which reveals the criminality of their actions. All three partners are looking to make money regardless of who is killing whom. Most disturbing is that some of the most western and democratic governments are part arms deals that are unnecessary, at the expense of taxpayers , an at times end up
with weapons delivered to their worst enemies. Money and profit is above all!.
