Nice and dirty
By Allen Smalling
There are quite a few books out there that present the street-level language they never teach in school, and in no language more so than French. I have seen a few of them, and DIRTY FRENCH is my favorite, probably because it is the least shy about being, well, dirty. Some of the competitor texts mostly lay out lists of vocabulary, but this one takes you right into the situation: even in Chapter One, "Howdy French," we encounter an exemplary American introducing himself: "I'm Brad. I'm from Colorado and I'm hung like a horse" (the book is quick to point out that the analogous quadruped in French is actually a donkey, not a horse, which the French apparently find more impressive). DIRTY FRENCH offers great ways to be nice -- and nasty -- so you can give as well as you get in French-speaking countries. Here's where you learn to say, "I love your boyfriend's hairy chest (J'adore la poitrine poilu de ton mec)," or "Your girlfriend looks like a bottle of Perrier (Ton copine ressemble a un bouteille de Perrier)," in other words no chest, big butt. True to the book's nature, Chapter Five, "Horny French," lays out sexual situations from the routine to the kinky with admirable thoroughness (I wish censorship restrictions did not keep me from giving examples, but if you can imagine doing it, it's probably in here). A couple of minor objections: since the book is organized more toward actual sentences than presenting grammar, sometimes grammatical niceties are omitted: infinitives of verbs, say, or whether it's la or le "bite." At times it's a little too trendy for its own good: after giving the two commonest terms for "street bum," the abbreviation "SDF" appears without explanation (dear reader, it means "sans domicile fixe," without fixed domicile or what we'd call "homeless"). But since this book is not yet five years old, the attempts to be *au courant* generally come off well, and discussions of fast-food joints, Parisian rappers and hit TV shows and radio stations are welcome. All in all, I am happy to give DIRTY FRENCH five stars.

Scandalously Fun Material - Shabby Binding
By dennis wentraub
This slim compilation of raw vernacular lives up (?) to its title. So, that being said, there is a lot to recommend this book. It's a fun and useful read on its predictable subject matter. There are also bits on pop culture - the media, sports, French personality stereotypes, food, eating places, and even a few drinking songs that vary the book's uh-h primary thrust. Sadly, the publishers have undercut the authors' best efforts with a shoddy glued binding that - in my copy - began to break apart at page 30, rapidly disintegrated, and is now being held together by a rubber band.

This is a really good book on french slang
By john anderson
This is a really good book on french slang. You need a reasonable understanding of the language before you come to this book. Most every course I have done on french teaches how to talk the language too properly! This book really helps to fill in some gaps with expressions as french people really use them in day to day conversation.
